Want to try Flats for the first time on my SP1-5. Which strings do you recommend that have some grip and would be the easiest to transition into?
I'm playing with 40oz to Freedom, its a national Sublime Tribute act. We are driving, that's why i'm bringing the SP1. Been using a Ibanez 1505MS with Aguilar DCB's and a Sadowsky Pre for flying.... until my Effigy arrives, lol.

I'm in love with the La Bella Deep Talkin Bass.. Jason at FN set me up with a set that's similar in gauge/tension to the La Bella for Multiscale which i just adore on my reggae NG.
Jazzbones is not far from me, but, I don't know that I'm free Sunday night. Will have to play it by ear though!

These have been my go-to flats for years. I prefer them to every other flat wound I’ve tried, including TI flats.
They were very revolutionary at one point. The first basses with active electronics (they have filter-based preamps too). Maybe the first boutique bass builder. High quality woods/builds.
Some early users were Jack Cassidy, Phil Lesh, Stanley Clark, and even JPJ used one for awhile.
In my experience, a very clean/sterile sound, stiff feeling and some awkward ergonomics. I found the reach longer on my 34” scale Alembic than my long scale Dingwall. Obviously, some subjectivity to my opinion but I believe they mainly appeal to older players that want to relive the 60s and 70s.
had a closer look at one that was 17k. it does look well made. the matching wood on the rear panels was well done. and a greatful dead link and early boutique image makes sense for the generation to desire. i am too young.
build… i can respect them, but never was a fan of the wide symmetric body with short horns. i am sure some alembic players have similar views of my tastes, so all good.

Still diggin on these?I was able to fit 35” scale Dogall Hellborg Rounds set (JH1716S 35) on my Dingwall NG3.
It’s a very special set of strings, stranded core, single wrap of pure nickel. Tension feels similar to TI JR but due to being single wrap B and E strings are VERY textured. Not rough though, just typical pure nickel rubbery feel that goes away.
Afaik it’s the only pure nickel round that kind of fits, not counting custom made sets ofc.
Taper on B just barely clears the nut, but it does clear it.
I put some very thin super glue right at the spot where string tapers, and trimmed the silk to clear the nut.
Rest of the strings fit as is, no cutting required but high stings obviously have some extra winds.
I also covered all string silks with a coat of elmers glue, it stops overly fragile silks from fraying and makes it a little bit rubbery - it doesn’t skip under tension. Those strings are known for very fragile and slippery silks. Elmers hack completely solves both problems.
Finally, a non-clanky pure nickel round-wound.
Sounds absolutely terrific and super easy to play and fret.
Prepare for a price shock if you want to look those up.
Yeah. Tbh I find it truly troubling to play anything but this set on any bass with a B string. I now hear B string out of tune overtones on regular strings, sometimes even on E too if it’s .105 or more.
TI JR/JF is ok until fret 12 but not above.
37” also makes a difference but I can still hear the dissonance on B.
Dogal rounds work all the way up to 24th fret. No weird overtones at all.
And those strings last. Price is absolutely idiotic though. It drives me crazy, I wish I never tried them.
I wish they had a brighter sounding set, pure nickel is ok on NG3 as it removes some unpleasant (to me) treble that preamp knobs can’t touch, but it doesn’t work on naturally darker sounding basses.
If you mean that it's too thin and/or mid-forward you should try playing it very loud on a big (and if possible more or less transparent) full-range system.
The extended frequency range combined with fletcher-munson take care of that problem - I found the end result quite enjoyable to say the least
Does anyone have any experience putting a filter preamp in their Dingwall à la Underhill or Lusithand? I don’t get a whole lot of use out of the Glock on mine (I prefer EQ-ing through pedals) and I’m interested if this has been worthwhile for others.
I did in an older AB1, with dual filter pres for each pickup (ACG pres though). It was... neat, but, it didn't super click with me in the way I had hoped. Of all the preamps that I've tried (that AB1 became a bit of a test mule), the one that I really, super, totally love is the Neve pre. The glock is second. I still have both of the ACG pres, I may do something else with them someday, I just don't know what. I know at least two other people went further with it and had multi-coil pickups wound plus dropped in filter preamps too, but the names of who did that escape me at the moment.
Years ago I had a Fodera fretless 5 that (despite my fretless StingRay being lightyears easier to play) had THE quintessential “Fretless tone” once I slapped some Thomastik Jazz Rounds on it. VERY expensive 5 string set that really elevated that bass into the stratosphere for me. BUT, that incredible tone turned into a plain dead old round wound sound way too quickly for the price. I love fresh zing.
I’m normally do not enjoy limp noodle strings though I’m surprisingly happy with Ernie Ball Super Slinkys on my fretted StingRay. I get the feeling these Dogal strings are on the looser more flexible side of of spectrum. Just last week I put on some GHS pressure wounds on my NG3-5 and they’re pretty stiff but feel nice under my fingers. The Dingwall strings were like cheese graters but sounded noticeably better. Got a couple sets of Payson nickels on the cheap in the mail so we’ll see how those stack up at some point.
Dogals are looser than TI jazz rounds on 34” indeed, but closer to TI Jazz flats on 37” .
And yeah if you like zing and stout strings - skip Dogals for sure.
Payson rounds are too daddario to my taste (don’t like), but their flats are cool. Remind me of DR legend flats.
Idk why Dingwall nickels felt rough to you, for me they are on smoother side of rounds.
Also check dunlop nickels, they are fairly inexpensive, on the softer side (but not TI jazz loose) and I’d say they are smoother than usual on fingers, but that’s just my impression. Good strings, not overly bright like name suggests, just regular nps bright.
