I received my SP1 two days ago and opened it last night. The bass is gorgeous, but I’m noticing something odd with the volume knob. Instead of a smooth, gradual 1–10 volume sweep like I’ve experienced with every other instrument I’ve owned, this volume knob behaves differently and think I may have a problem.

At full volume (10), I set my peak in Logic at −8 dB. At 0, it registers no sound, which is expected. However, during the first 60% of the knob’s rotation, the volume stays extremely low, hovering between −45 dB and −40 dB. From roughly 60–80% of the turn, it increases to around −35 dB to −30 dB. In the final 20% of the turn, the volume spikes sharply to between −12 dB and −8 dB.

This doesn’t seem normal for a volume pot. Let me know what you think.

In other words: at 0 it’s silent, which is normal. From 1–6, the volume remains very low and barely changes as the knob is turned. From 6–8, it gets slightly louder, and then from 8–10 the volume jumps dramatically.

It's an Audio taper pot. They react that way. Linear taper is what is in the NG and Combustion series and Im pretty sure my Z too.. If you'd like a smoother and more consistent roll off, swap it for Linear. (B500K)

I swapped my vol pot for a 250k Audio pot to cut some of the highs (i felt SP1 was too bright), but after 2 gigs like that I'm going to order a linear taper instead. It wasn't crucial with this particular band on this run, but I can already tell it would be more useful to me.

Hence, I am assuming it was discounted for being an older unit that was not sold before the shop got re-stocked with the newer ones.
My question is: when did Dingwall introduced the new minimalistic bridges on the 4 string Drocs?
Just to estimate for how long has the one I am buying stood in the warehouse.

The minimalist 4 string bridges started to show up in Chinese basses last year, the Rio Dream Bass was the first I saw. Then they started to be used in other models. But there was old stock, even at the factory, for a while after this. So I'm guessing not more than a year.

Thanks a lot! I guess it might not be that old a bass after all, which is good news for me.
With the Xmass festivities I am not expecting to get it until next week. I will report back once it is eith me!

I guess I’m failing to understand why these would work this way. It’s basically and on off switch with the only usable volume being 8-10

I can only assume its a nod towards the "vintage" look and feel of the SP1. Linear seems to.be much more prevalent on active systems. A lot of electric guitars use audio taper for volume.

I started having problems with my NG3 cutting out again. I bought it new in June. This problem has been taken care of once by Glaser Instruments only to start having problems with it again a couple of weeks ago.
I absolutely love this bass! It plays, sounds and feels perfect. It’s just been unreliable.
Awaiting a response from dealer.

i share similar aesthetic concerns. the neck wood contacting the pickups in an ab1 is part of why they look so good imho, but the neck/fretboard need matching wood imho. it looks wrong otherwise. i might consider an effigy if i could pick neck woods to prevent the mismatch. Sheldon is likely reading. Beautiful design otherwise, but let us choose neck woods.

Hang on…hang on, I’m just picturing the cutouts for an AB2 on that, and mentally blackening the fingerboard a bit…imagining the frets as segmented lines…and mentally putting in the S/P switches…

Yeah, I definitely am eager for my AB2 to be finished up and get to me.

i was to get an ab2 but swapped to ab1 as i fell in love with the aesthetic simplicity of a solid colour ab1. nolly getgoods yellow ab1 six was perfection. i did it in green (gt3 rs style Porsche viper green). to this day it remains my number 1 forever bass.

Current 5-string Dingwall pickups with rounded ends, as found in all of the 37" B-string models, are 4-7/16" long and 1-1/4" wide.
Older early versions had squared ends and were probably slightly shorter but I don't have any for reference, so someone else would have to field that one.
