The older non-rounded end pickups from my 2005 AB1 are 4 1/4" long and 1 5/16" wide. This is measuring at the bottom of the pickup - the dimensions at the top surface of the pickup are slightly smaller (~1/8 "), as the sides are slightly sloped outward from top to bottom.
I love my refinished D-Bird’s color so much that I want as close to it as I can get:
We’re not 100% certain of the exact paint mix that the refinished got from his automotive paint dealer, though. After some back and forth, Dingwall suggested the edge green from this bass:
Which may or may not be the same as your 6, I’m not 100% sure given lighting and contrasting colors. Either way, a hugely saturated, very bright green. And I can’t wait. AB2 with SFII pickups, Darkglass TC, S/P switches, wenge neck and segmented line fretless fingerboard, in the Obsidian Maple torrified and resin infused wood that they’ve changed to in place of Macassar Ebony.
so a green ab2. kinda how mine might have been had i not swapped. very cool. how many strings?
p.s. that green edged z3 is amazing! and i would not be surprised if they used my green again. they really liked it. less of a yellow green than the Ferrari green.

Welp I officially caved and have a black sp1 5er that will wear rounds coming to pair with my vintage burst 5er with flats.
On my D-Bird? That one was originally a Vintageburst that I bought used. I intended to play it, as is, for a while but eventually refinish. Then, right after it arrived, one of the threaded inserts for the pickup mounting pulled out, and I needed that repaired anyway. My Dingwall dealer (JFB) recommended Pat Wilkins, who did a phenomenal job of turning my description of the green I wanted into reality. Superb customer service, too.
mine was a custom paint to match option for a new build. porsche colour. 250-500$ upcharge. i forget the exact price.

The import D-Birds had the same color-matched bevels on the headstock sides that are now solely on the Canadian D-Rocs. So, originally, the bass came to me with a Vintageburst finish on those beveled surfaces, and I asked for Pat’s team to do them the same as the body.
Here, you can see my other D-Bird, an Aquaflake model, with the factory painted side bevels:
It's fun seeing those D-bird/D-roc side by side. I actually like the D-roc shape even more. I wonder if Sheldon already had some lines in that realm sketched from the design phase, or if the design change pressure pulled some inspiration out of him/team?
Aesthetics aside, there are pluses and minuses to each. Off the top of my head, upper fret access is easier on the D-Roc, while the D-Bird is more friendly to 90° angled cable plugs.
I also really do like that the import D-Birds had those painted bevels on the headstocks, although I’m sure that it would be a not insignificant extra cost to still have it on the import D-Rocs.

Received my new sp1 5er and gave it a test run.
Some pretty brutal sympathetic vibrations between the 9th fret on the G string(high E) and the open A.
I play floating thumb for muting reasons and it's strong enough that if I pluck the high E whilst muting the open A and then shift my thumb elsewhere, it will audibly begin to vibrate.
If I pluck the high E and move my finger on and off the A string it actually creates a somewhat of a strobing/pulsing effect every time I re mute the string.
Also a prominent dead spot with a high overtone on the 7th fret of the G string.
When comparing it with my other sp1 5er that I already own it's like night and day as far as odd resonances/overtones.
I really hate to be nitpicky but for the price and the quality I'm accustomed to from dingwall it's hard not to.
I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience with their sp1s or not, or if I'm just being a big baby.
Was a bit worried going with sweetwater after a perfect experience with jason at fretnation for my first one but they were the only US dealer I saw with stock.
Going to see about swapping it for another one at Sweetwater.
Received my new sp1 5er and gave it a test run.
