Took me a week to sort out the correct strap adjustment to be comfortable down low on my NG3-5. Those lower 3 frets on the B are a reach for sure. Would love to get my hands on an SP1-5 and fantasizing a fretless conversion.

There is a reach reducing strap lock on the back of custom builds that pulls the neck closer. I had one installed on my NG3 and it solved the reach issue.

Pretty much, or to put it another way, the lower frets end up a couple inches closer to the center of your body. This video from JFB has a full walk-through of what you need and how to do it. I did it on my NG3 and now the factory strap lock is gathering dust! (And I'm not all that handy, it was nerve-wracking to drill into this pricey of an instrument, but it worked out)!

Shortly after placing my custom AB order in December (only 23 months ETA now!), I saw an ad for a 2019 AB at 1/3 the price of my order. It matched several of my specs (5-string, maple/maple neck, S/P pickup toggle switches, fully passive).

I convinced myself it would be a good investment to ensure I was thoroughly familiar with the AB before finalizing my custom specs. It arrived yesterday.

OMG it's stellar! I dipped my toes into the multiscale waters with an Ibanez SRMS805, which is a very good bass... but the AB is in a whole different league.

I'm very happy with the neck, the string spacing, the S/P toggle switches, the ergonomics, and the tone and strength of the pickups. I'm going to reach out to Dingwall to find out what pickups and body woods were used to build this.

No regrets! I'm delighted to have joined the club.

Check the letters in the corner of the pickup near the B string to see the type. Looks like FDV?

You nailed it! Funny, I had asked the seller and he said he would have to pull the pickups to figure it out, so I told him not to bother.

And when it arrived, I took a quick look but the letters are so subtle I didn't see them. With my bleary morning eyes I needed to use a magnifying glass (zoomed in camera) to confirm that they were FDV and not FD3

With that, the older pick ups have larger writing across the whole shell. Those ones are labeled on the underside.

Also,

This looks like an AB1 with the gloss finish. That would make a standard spec body alder.

ab2 standard would be chambered walnut (cutout F holes)

ABZ is selected lightweight swamp ash, Matt finish.

Honestly, they had me right up until I saw it was a maple neck 😂 I'd also really want to try one out before buying one, since I'm really curious what the neck profile is. The knob layout is a really neat touch but I feel like it lost the dramatic touch which the usual arc of knobs brought. Still cool though! Can't wait for someone here to get one :D

My first guessed are likely cost or complexity. Re-using that same component for all the Ready To Play is one less change in BOM as well as multiple steps in production. I hear ya though, for those who use cables with 90 degree, these are apparently a bit difficult.

Line 6 G10 wireless is difficult too.

I had to order a 3d print of this. With a straight extension cable it works and bracket and transmitter is held by a strap like a real wireless.

(Link is a free stl file download, one has to order print of this thing elsewhere or use own 3d printer)

That’s a big one for me! The non-compound radius on my NG is my biggest complaint. After playing my Z for a while, I find my thumb/fingers getting stuck in the inner strings with that extra space under the pickups sometimes when thumping/speed-thumbing until I can readjust. Fingerstyle and all are fine though.

And the string-to-string output as well bothers me. May sell it to help fund the JU Sig. Or is it the Sol sig.? Or the JU Sol sig.? I can’t quite tell from the marketing 😆

I have to say I’m quite bummed the final version didn’t come with the ghost speedos like his prototype. Those were sooo perfect! Speedo dots? Meh, it’s okay I guess, as long as the price is in line with the rest of the imports.

I think the dealbreaker for me will be the neck profile, whether it’s closer to the thicker Combustion/NG or thinner Z, favoring the Z of course.
