I can attest that FDV + Neve is an insanely good combo. I have that in my latest Z (3x, 5 string). It can get pretty crisp, but I don't think I'd quite say "Hi Fi", in the sense that I think of that phrase. Very clear and articulate, but can get reallllly sweet too.
Wish I could hit both of your shows up! Arlington is a haul though.

Love seeing all the NBDs here. I don't want to talk over other folks'. I may snap some family photos tonight but may wait a little before sharing, to give other people's NBD time to shine!

I’ve had Dingwalls with the SFII/Neve combo and FDV/DG. At first I was keen on the former, but after giggling I preferred the more traditional tone of the FDV/DG. It comes closer to a Fender Jazz, which has always been the tone I strive for (alnico).

FDV/DG is my fave. Hits me on in all the right places coming from a jazz bass background, and the high mid tone control is waaaay more useful than a traditional high control on bass, IMO/IME, like bringing old strings back to life.

hmm... methinks I should have gone for the FDV's.... When I got my Z6 (the one i just traded away), it had the Glock and SF2's - which i thought sounded too MTD-ish for me, so I installed some FD3's. I LOOOOVE the FD3's- those with the Glock and a pick is a fantastic tone, especially with dirt, drop tunings, and thicker strings. The FD3's arent bad with the DGTC either, i do like that sound as well. I put the SF2's from the Z6 into my 6-string NG3, the SF2/DGTC combo sounds really good in that bass, i use it mainly for fingerstyle stuff and it cuts right through. A little on the Hi-fi/MTD-ish side, but nothing like the SF2's with the Glock or Neve.

SF2/Neve is an amazing sound - like REALLY, REALLY freaking good, just not what I would call "me".

Yeah, of all the pickup shootouts I’ve heard, the SFII’s are my least favorite and FDV’s are always my favorite. Others have different opinions of course depending on goals. I just find the FDVs to be the most natural and organic sounding which is what I like.

The FD3(n)s are my second favorite for a more modern tone.

SF2s with a Trickfish Flexcore preamp that, on-paper at least, matches the specs of the Neve in my Super J and I couldn't be happier. Much preferred to the FDVs that came in it originally. It originally had a Glock preamp, which was very nice but I prefer the Flexcore I'm currently using. My incoming SJ5 has SF2s and a Neve, and I assume it's going to be very similar which is exactly what I want.

I would have thought sounding like John Taylor is a good thing! I spec'd SF2/Neve in my upcoming AB1, partly bc I love 2 band preamps (the 2EQ Stingray being my favorite bass) and partly because Dingwall upgraded me to SF2s for free since they ran out of Alnico.

I initially had gone with FDV since they are included and I had them in my D-Roc. I thought they sounded great, they have a nice mid-grind which I guess you could associate with being vintage. But I figured what the hell let's try something new.

I have heard something similar. I notified my dealer of the pickup change a month ago, so I might be out of date. Maybe they have gotten enough stock of alnico V to start making the FDV again. My bass hasn't even entered production yet (order has been submitted for 11 months and counting), so we will see if they end up honoring the SF2 upgrade. Who knows, they could run out of magnets again by the time it's my turn.

Regardless, there are no wrong choices here. Whatever I get will be awesome I'm sure.

Obviously it’s not in a band mix… but THAT tone is the end all be all for me. That neck/bridge tone with the Neve on and the bass boosted is all I’d really ever need to be honest. Blends what I love about the mid range characters of the StingRay in series, the Ken Smith both pickups on in parallel, and both pickups on a J bass… not that any of those basses sound alike in any way… except there’s a growl in the mids with a DEEP low end that’s still tight…

Good lord I could listen to that all day.

I have the SF2/DGTC combo in my Z 5 string. I think it is a fantastic combo; I don’t usually tweak the knobs but just engaging the DGTC gives a slight bump at the right frequencies to compliment the SF2s nicely. My mids growl nicely but it doesn’t sound/feel EQ engineered.
