Dingwall Owners Club

Well I thought I was going to be a Dingwall owner today. Ordered from Bass Central arrived today . They didn't package this bass with enough cushion.View attachment 390656.

Sheeesh...a full refund is definitely in order, and they should honestly be embarrassed to have done that poor/cheap of a packing job :scowl:

Ouch! I've only had one bass get busted up in shipping... It was a Peavey Foundation, so I'll live :)

Tonight's rig (upright bass not pictured)

I am a darkwood fretboard man. I know that the production models will all be maple/maple, but I'm willing to invest in a Sheldon mod maybe. I have to think about it, but the yellow with ebony is what Larry Hartke and I call, "Hartke Yellow cool!"

I actually still love the green bass. I offered to take it home but unfortunately Sheldon needs it for the London Bass show. Darn it, I'll have to wait for the full production run.....Ferrari Green.....

I ordered mine in yellow. Nolly was nice enough to let me try his prototype and I fell in love with it. I asked Barry about any customization and he said he could look into it but probably not for the first production run.

While I am obviously not privy to the packing job done by Bass Central, let's not forget the role the carrier played in this. A bass doesn't get shattered like that without some serious mishandling of it. And while one hopes that one can package an instrument to withstand most atrocities to which it is subjected, trust me when I say one cannot. I know this from experience.

That being said, bass central as the shipper is responsible for taking the bass back, seeking compensation from the carrier and making Mr. Granddesign whole and happy.

There was no damage to the outside of the package.the only damage was on the inside of the cardboard box. The bass was wrapped in a thin foam paper then put in a triangle cardboard box then put into another cardboard box. No other packaging, peanuts, foam paper nothing. The outside of the package had no damage. I opened it and immediately saw the crack. I didn't even take it out the box. It was a poor packaging job done. And it was Fedex. I ship basses the time and for many basses shipped and never had any damage because they were all packaged well. Given that there was no damage on the outside, it probably fell from a very high place to the ground flat, so the damage, was done by the instantaneous deceleration of the bass inside. Like a concussion of the brain.

I have also shipped and received at least a hundred basses, and twice I have sustained similar damage, even though one I packed and was extremely well protected and another was shipped to me,and very well-packed as well.

Interestingly both were Dingwalls, both were in hardshell cases, and both had cushioning around the bass inside the case as well as outside with bubble wrap.

In one case, the volume knob was sheered off at the shaft, with the shaft still in the knob now floating around in the case.

In the other, there was a hair line crack in the top, about two inches long.

In both cases there was absolutely no damage to the outside of the boxes or the cases.

There is no doubt that the damage on these two basses, was caused by a very high drop, causing huge forces inside of the case.

Now, would the damage have been worse had they not been so well protected? No doubt. But these basses, could not have been better protected.

So my point only is that sometimes even the best packed basses can still get damaged if the fall they experience is high enough and the surface they hit is hard enough.

Sounds like that bass should have been much better protected. But it's hard to say that had it been, it would have been spared all damage. That package was clearly mishandled somehow. It's also possible that it had been stacked under some really heavy packages during the trip. A bass in a gig bag would not deal with that we'll either.

MAN DOWN !

This just breaks my heart.

Both my basses were shipped from Bass Central. Packaging was minimalistic compared to how I ship, but no different than Zzounds or any of the other big box stores. And yes, I had nightmares last night after seeing the damage pic and thinking what could have been with either of my Dings.

I have probably been through 50 basses, so call it a hundred shipping experiences because most of those went back out. I only had one damaged item, a Fender FSR J that was quickly replaced.

I know that there is a huge price increase when double boxing. 89.00 to Cali for single box versus 133.00 double boxed with original box bubble wrapped for extra cushion. The bigger box is big enough to contain 2 basses. Most of vender's probably had to make a financial decision while offering free shipping.

I wonder if a vendor would off the choice of adding a shipping sur charge and packing it like it was an alembic, at the customer's choice.

I am all but certain that Bass Central will help you resolve. Short of buying from a private party, I am not so sure that packing is significantly better from any other retailer.

Please keep us informed of how things go. I am sorry so your loss. It is very dark day when a Dingwall is cut down in the prime of its life.

Agreed. I noticed on the Dingwall website the gig bags are "available separately". Inexpensive shipping insurance IMO, which continues to protect your instrument into the future. A bag may not have prevented this tragedy, but I'm convinced that it would have increased the odds in favor of a safe arrival. Bubble wrap is even less expensive - why wouldn't they use some instead of that thin foam stuff? Crumpled up paper is even less expensive and would have provided better protection. This really is a bummer and I'm sorry to see it happen to a Dingwall brother (in spirit). :rollno:

Ive had no luck getting a response from dingwall.I need to get that b booster kit and strings (really need the strings ) and want to order both at the same time.registered for the dingwall forum last saturday still no verification email, sent an email through the contact link on their website a couple days ago about the b booster and nothing yet.
