Dingwall Owners Club

Singlemalt, glwts. I suspect the gear will be back. I had to thin things out with 2 kids in college. Then I got a home equity loan?!?

Graphics. I'm happy with a Super P/J 5, Fretless Super P 5, and long scale Prima Artist. Pretty nice stable! (Now insured?!)
Don't play it if it messes with your hands!

Were you playing the Fender sitting down or standing?

If it was hanging off a strap, a couple of factors could be involved. Here are two that immediately come to mind:
1. How heavy is the Fender compared to your Dingwall?
2. How high or low does it hang on the strap?
3. Does it neck-dive, if you take your hands off the bass?

Weight may matter, more than you would think. For instance, I'm having a pig of a time right now with bursitis in my left shoulder. I can play any of my basses seated, but I can't go more than about 20 minutes if the weight of the bass is hanging off a strap. Even the Dingwall, which is my lightest...

Strap height affects a bunch of stuff related to hand mechanics. Try raising or lowering the Fender, to see if it helps.

Neck dive puts extra stress on your forearm, wrist and hand muscles. For a healthy person, it barely matters. For anyone with CT or other RSI's, it can be enough to send them off the deep end.

Anyway, if you were playing sitting down when all this started, then it could be the neck profile on the Fender, and/or the (slightly) more contorted shape that you fretting hand has to take on a parallel-fret bass.

Some people with CT find that narrow necks (i.e.; your typical Fender Jazz) aggravate their wrists and hands as much or more than a big, wide 6 string. This is a very personal thing.

My dad had to have a couple of hand surgeries towards the end of his career. Not just CT, but osteo-arthritis as well. Regardless, he got hooked up with a hand specialist in Toronto who had specific experience with musicians.

If you're already talking to someone, quiz them a bit. They might be able to look at your posture when you are holding your basses in playing position, and make suggestions. Even better, they might make a referral to someone who has worked with musicians before...

In the meantime, if the Fender is hurting you, leave it on the shelf for now.

In the long run, CT can be a problem that gets worked out with some help, or it can end up being a career-ender. This is not something to mess around with!
Steve...I wouldn't mind the name of that Toronto Doctor...incase I need him/her. (please n thanks)
I cant find the weight of my Fender (its an American Deluxe Dimension IV HH)....it does have a bit of neck dive - but cuz im new and not much to compare it too, I assume its reasonable...for 90% of guys that try it I guess.
I was standing at first while playing and then sat partway through...thinking it would be less strap strain....I keep it strapped on the higher "geeky" lookin side...I am not good enough or cool enough to pull off the "low rider" look. hahaha

...funny you mentioned thicker necks possibly being better for certain hand issues- I had a Fender guitar (which I sold years ago - foolishly) and it had a baseball bat neck - the fattest thickest sexiest birdeye maple neck ever.....it felt "right"...but I sold it to fund some other hobby...wish'd I hadn't....anyway, I never had the hand cramps or pain. Maybe that's also why the DW isn't affecting me as much...its a five string neck ......hmmm.....
The warwick neck isn't fat fat, but has a rounded thicker C shape neck - which feels amazing.....but I am pretty sure she's a tank. I will bring it to the next Toronto gear meeting....if I don't sell it first - I would struggle to part with that one tho....
I wonder what my AB1 passive bass (5er) weighs...I assume 9lbs?...I would assume the other basses I have would also be around that, maybe a bit more...but that "bit" might be just enough to cause me grief.
Im going to see my redheaded masseuse later today - she makes me feel warm and happy...no not THAT kind of "happy". :)
...back to gear selling thoughts... :(

Okay, you guys have been waiting all day to see it: For Sale - Dingwalls for Sale! Super P/J 4 & 5 string, AB-1 5&6 string. | TalkBass.com

The short story: I have too much gear, not enough time or playing situations, and a kid headed off to college in the fall. I'm cleaning house until I have one Dingwall, one amp, my B3 and my loop station.

The whalepool flame maple AB-1 sixer just left for Ohio.

I'll let fate determine which Dingwall I keep, any one of them will be perfect.

More photos and gear to follow, if you follow me, can you dig it?

They are all nice instruments, but that flamey AB is exceptional!

Decisions, decisions... I'm about to pull the trigger on a new order and join the long agonizing wait that we are all familiar with, BUT I am still deciding on a few final specs as well a color combination.

So far I know this much: Super P with reversible pickup and two pick guards to cater for both positions, 5 strings passive... now the decision is to be made on wood / neck. Sheldon can you hear me??
I am a fan of vintage colors therefore I might go for a nice sea foam green or surf green whichever way you want to call it, but I wouldn't know if to go for Ash or Alder for the body, I like the idea of the new slimline body without tone chambers for weight reduction, in fact I want this bass to be as light as it can possibly get and... I know I don't do rosewood, or any other dark fret boards so it's got to be maple all the way, but I do not want that anemic Ibanezy maple necks, so I would want an aged looking maple one piecer, no laminate sections. I just prefer it to be one piece.

Something like this but... no pick guard, no matching head stock and a less anemic maple board, also I don't know if the picture didn't render the color well but I also find this shade of green to be slightly a bit pale compared to my PRS with similar color combo which I would really want to mimic on this new Dingwall project, so what say you's?

So yesterday was my first time ever in a real legitimate studio, and I'm really glad it was with my ABZ. The band is 4 piece: piano/ singer girl, drums, guitar, bass.

I was DI'd with an Avalon U5 into an Avalon tube pre, and the engineer said he didn't even have to EQ anything to get sweet, sweet tone. I had the pickups in series, tone control open 15%, just enough to get a little finger noise in the headphones.

They just had the U5 on the floor like it didn't cost $600 new.

I'm sad they didn't get any frontal shots of the ABZ, just cuz it looks so damned nice.

Hopefully I'll have tracks to share with everyone after everything's mixed on Tuesday. I had to channel my inner Sklar and my @BurningSkies (there's a reggae inspired track in 3/4).

Nice! Is that SubCat? I assume it's not Newhouse (unless they've redone it so it's unrecognizable). I look forward to hearing what you've got. We're headed to More Sound in Sept.

Yup, SubCat. The guys were super nice and the session went real smooth. Excited to hear the end product (and go back and fix some things I know I flubbed).

Theater gig? I thought the AF gig was done? Or some club stuff. We're at the Palace on Saturday.
The musical is long over.

Funk ensemble at The Warehouse near downtown, and then late night Sunday at Alto Cinco. Closing out the semester and sending off the seniors with some serious funk jamming.

Tell us how the Cinco gig goes. They're fairly new to booking. It's a good location but I don't know what kind of space they have for the band. They contacted us about Otro, but I'm not sure we can fit in the door and there are couple other questions.

Cinco will be... Interesting, just based on logistics. We're a big group. 3 rotating drummers with aux percussion, 2 keyboards, 2 guitars, 2 bones, trumpet, sax, bass. How we'll even fit in Alto with room for listeners I don't know. Luckily Alto is laid back and the guy that contacted us is just excited because he was also in the funk ensemble a few years ago.

Also, the assistant engineer at SubCat is in charge of booking at Funk N Waffles on the Hill, and might want some members of the funk band to act as sort of a house band for a structured open jam he wants to start doing this summer, so he's gonna check us it at Alto.

In other news, I really want @singlemalt 's flamed maple ABI. So pretty. Alas, no money and I can't justify flipping the ABZ6 and going back to five strings.

Cool. The Hill Funk can be a good room.

My suggestion to you is that if you can also score a weekend night one of the first couple of weeks of Fall semester...and then either do it for 0 door or really low cost 3$ door...do it. Then plaster the hell out of campus with fliers (hundreds of them, saying both FREE or CHEAP and ALL AGES)...I mean right up on the dorm front steps, dining hall entries, Mount stairs, on the Quad sidewalks. My old band back in the 90's did this and it locks in all the freshman who can't get into a bar/club and haven't made all their friends yet. Then you have a captive fanbase for 4 years. I did this in no less than 4 bands and it totally packed the house. Funk get repeat customers, you get an instant fanbase.

A. Gold is a longtime friend of mine...not that you need any help, but if you want me to put in a word. We found our lead singer behind the bar at the U. Funk.

Thanks Steve, looks like I might give an Afterburner I a go. I don't believe it has a back strap button, but it does have a neck P PUP and is right about my 8 lb goal. Should make my back happy.

Hey bro, I was in the same predicament a few weeks ago, I wish I could've bought both a Super P 5 and an ABZ 6, but I decided to experience the full 37'-33.5' dingwall experience with the ABZ... we'll see how it goes once my beauty is finished by september, according to Barry :)

Looks like the owner is keeping the ABI, talked to Barry about an ABII, he said they come in around 8.5 lbs. I was hoping for closer to 8, so either play the waiting came for one to come on the market at the right weight or order an ABZ5 or Super P5, he said either can come around 8.1 lbs.

Cozumel, a beautiful area!
