Dingwall Owners Club

According to sites that claim to weigh instruments accurately, ABZ's tend to come in at between 7 lb and change and the very low 8's. Mine is 8 lb even.

Super P's can be found in the same range, but usually a hair heavier. There are thin and regular bodied P's. I don't know how they compare weight-wise, as I haven't been watching the websites since I bought my ABZ 5.

At the GTG I attended in Markham, Sheldon told me that the thin finish on the ABZ's, along with the lack of a battery and preamp make them the lightest. Apparently a gloss finish makes a difference of a few ounces over the rubbed finish.

The figured top on the average AB1 or II also bumps it up.

Here is where I am with the pick ups moved. I have a few other things to figure out before I drop this off at the luthier. He is going to do the routing, pick up installation, and pre amp swap. I might have attempted that kind of work back when I had access to the machine/wood shop in grad school. In this life I will leave it to the professionals. ;)

Do the FD-3N pickups have 4-conductors, or 2?
I'm curious if there would be a tonal difference between each pickup wired in parallel, then in series with the other -- of each pickup wired series internally, then parallel with the other pickup.

If 4-conductor, you have LOTS of options, and they might yield some VERY different voices.

But if you end up treating the (middle+ bridge) as a single unit, you'd lose the "soloed middle" option, but you could use a garden-variety 3-way switch to get:
  • Neck Solo
  • Middle + Bridge
  • All 3 pickups

I think if you really like the soloed middle, you could find a 4-way switch easily enough and have the options be:
  • Neck Solo
  • Middle Solo
  • Middle + Bridge
  • All 3 pickups

There's definitely a difference between wiring the pickups in series internally, then in parallel, and wiring them in parallel internally then running them in series.

The problem with garden variety switches is that they wire pups in parallel. Series souns much better to my ears. If I could, I'd have a 3 pup setup where I can individually turn them on and off, but always having them in series when using multiple (with controlled level reduction when using multiple.. :whistle:)

I don't know of FD-3N pickups, is that a new thing?

Would the stewmac switch let you add small pots to reduce the overall level when using multiple pickups in series? I'd be ok with having one small pot per selector position with multiple pickups.

You get some pretty erratic behavior when you try to interrupt and attenuate a series signal.

I know that because I replaced the volume pot in my AB with a pan pot, and it gets pretty funky moving the blend away from center when the pickup selector is anywhere but on the parallel setting.

I can see why Dingwall never offered it as an option, but it gives me several options that I really like.

Actually, the series setting on Dingwall switches has had a little pot on it for a while now. It is used to lower the level of the series setting a bit, to make it similar to other settings. It's inside the cavity.

I upgraded both my Dingwalls to that one when it came out.

We're talking about 2 different circuit topologies -- it's simple enough to attenuate a series signal AFTER the series link, and your example might be more relevant to this particular application.

I was just sharing my experience that when you interrupt the series link and bleed part of the signal to ground, some anomalous things happen.

I'm confused then. What's the problem? In that 6 position switch, couldn't you add small pots that only affect their corresponding settings? Because the dingwall small pot only affects the series setting. Sorry, I'm not really knowledgeable with this stuff.
