My only 37" experience was with my passive AB-I. The FD-3's are wonderful, but I installed a P-tone (neck position) out of curiosity. It sounds like a monster precision rather than a traditional one. The Super series are closer to a traditional design in tone and feel. I've not noticed any difference in sustain between long and medium-scaled Dingwalls.

A new project with some LA based session guys I work with regularly, definitely completely different than anything I've posted here before ;)

I checked with tech support and found: If you get a 3X with no toggle switches, the pickups are wired like this (although they can be changed by the end user):
- bridge pup - parallel
- middle pup - parallel
- neck pup - series
The rotary pickup selector is like this:
- bridge - soloed
- bridge/middle - in series
- bridge/neck - in parallel
- neck - soloed

This seems to cover all the best tones. I could see series/parallel being useful for the bridge pickup because two parallel pickups in series or two series pickups in parallel seem to have the right balance of fullness and detail. A volume pot with push/pull DPDT for series/parallel switching of the bridge pickup could be used to avoid mounting an external switch.
Active/passive switching with passive tone control is very useful with a preamp (Darkglass Tone Capsule). If the treble knob is a push/pull which provides this as seen in the demos, that is a very cool setup indeed!

If dual density swamp ash is available that would be awsome but regardless if it's ash or alder, I'd really like to go with a wenge neck/fingerboard. These are just beautiful.
The AB1 and Super J both have 3X pickup and preamp options so it's a question then of 37" or 35" scale. 37" is great for that piano like clarity but does the 35" have a bit more traditional vibe and is there any difference in percieved punch, sustain, or tone in the high strings? I haven't played a SuperJ or P so don't know how they stack up.

Check out the clip above, my SJ3X is wenge/ash...and if you're going with a 3X definitely get the series/parallel toggles, the tonal options with both are essentially limitless :thumbsup:

A year ago I saw an ABZ 6 with 2 band glock for $1650 USD in Bass NW. It was in excellent condition. It stayed there for weeks. I called the manager and he wouldn't take any other payment method than giving him my credit card numbers over the phone or email, which I wasn't comfortable with, that's why, sadly, I didn't get it. Now I'm paying 3k+ for my custom ABZ 6 but at least I'll have it the way I want it :)

Yeah, I'd be weary about send my credit card number too.

Thanks this is helpful. When I had the ABZ-5 I thought its tone was "big" (for lack of a better word) and defined with a bit different feel than I was used to.

That's a beautiful bass you've put to good use on your projects. Love that soloed P-tone in "No Diggity"; funky with a lot of attitude and works well with that groove. Good arrangement and vocals too! At a minimum I was thinking the bridge pickup needed a switch but all 3 expands your pallette to work with. The neck P-tone seems to have that grunt and aggressive mojo that P-pickups are known for but with a less hollow tone. I like that.

...I know of a place with two sexy ABZ's (one with preamp - one without)...and two combustions (new and older style)...all 5'ers. (all brand new) My temptations are holding out for a Super P or PJ.... if anyone wants info - PM me..... I have to protect one of the models though, INCASE I decide to pull the trigger this week hahaha...
That is a great lookin 3X too! :)

Question for those who Mod'd their Dingwall.....anyone ever add a thumb rest (in particular to an SJ5 or SP5)? I typically play with my thumb rooted at intersection of where the pick-guard meets the body, right about where the screw for the pick-guard is, by the B string side of the neck pickup. The other day I played my 77 Fender J, which has been starved for attention ever since getting the Dingwalls. It has a thumb rest, and though a little further toward the neck than I am envisioning, I remember that I like them. Contemplating adding one between the pickups (on the B side) and what that would mean (i.e. drilling holes). Too old school? Sacrilege? I've been fooling around with how it feels and where I would want it placed by using a Pink Pearl rectangular eraser as a mock up. I have to say, I really like the feel and what I've been missing. Please note- I don't plan on ever selling this bass. :) Just wondering if anyone else has made such a bold leap. .....or this too will pass? :-)
