Dingwall Owners Club

Hello everyone,

Been lurking for a while and thought I would now post as I've played a couple of super P's and an ABZ and definitely think a Dingwall is a step ahead for bass guitars.

Currently selling off the majority of my basses to fund one or potentially two dingwalls.

First order will be a Super P/J5 I think with the specs of:

Reverse P/FD3 set up
Ash body in trans White
Wenge neck
Black hardware and xtender
Tortoise shell pickguard.

I do like the look of the ABI and may go that road the next time 'round. Haven't had the chance to play one here in Australia so I don't know how it compares to the PJ which I like for its huge powerful low end and grind.

I'm coming from primarily a rickenbacker background.

I can't wait! But I will have to for more or less 8 months:p

Hey Mikael, from one Aussie to another :)

I've pretty well ordered what you have in an ABI (ash body, wenge neck) and I also went with the Glock pre and triple pickups. Deposit should be clearing in the next day or two.
George at Bass Gear Direct and Sheldon have both been pretty amazing to work with, I can't recommend them highly enough.
If ours both come in at the same time, we should play each others basses - I'd love to hear what a PJ sounds like with a wenge neck

I tried to buy that NAMM bass but missed out on it only by a few days. Had to settle on a regular order for the new Lamborghini Matte Orange color.
I believe he will also have one of the Ducati Matte White 4 strings at NAMM, which I also tried to buy and had to settle for a regular order. The early bird gets the worm.

I ordered an ABZ but with maple neck/wenge fretboard, triple pickups w/switches, and Darkglass pre.
Curious as to your thought's on getting the Glockenklang over the Darkglass.

I had a talk with Sheldon on this, but was curious as to other's thoughts.
My understanding, so far, is that the Glockenklang is a very clean pre with airy highs. The Darkglass is slightly colored but has, imo, a better mid approach. I know a lot of the Spector guys are changing out their pres to the Darkglass. For me, from what I understand so far, I would (and already have) buy the Darkglass for, just as an example, most rock and the Glockenklang for jazz. But that certainly doesn't mean either wouldn't work for all genre. Pick versus fingers may possibly influence a decision. I think the grind and mid approach from the Darkglass is a nice pairing with Sheldon's basses, but truthfully I would like one of each.

Probably comes down to routing templets. If you wanted a pick guard they could probably do a xxx body route, and just put two pick ups in it, kind of like they do with the combustion. You would have to get Sheldon to weigh in on the routing of just a middle/bridge routing. I know they have expressed to me in the past about not cannibalizing their own product lines. The NG-2 and Z2 already have those pick up configurations covered.

This is true, good points. I'm going to try a Z2 at NAMM but sticker shock may get me on that one.

Just ordered up a OBP-2 for the Voodoo Prima, along with a new blend pot, stacked bass/treble and an extra battery clip. I really like the OBP-1 in my Voodoo/Zebra (18v) and while the 2 had a slightly higher treble frequency, I roll that off anyway. Besides if I hate it, I'll take it out and look at something like the Glock 2 band. I'm going to take the ol' broad in for a check up in the next few weeks anyway and see if it needs a touch on the frets, etc. so I might as well do it all at once.

I just rewired the bridge pickup in series and left the middle pickup in parallel. Not only did it improve the J Position setting but it also helped the Musicman setting, Position 3 ... Middle Bridge.

I am trying to remove what I call the "Spector Tone". To me Spector Euros sound kinda nasal. Not my thing.

That's essentially my understanding too. The Glock is very clean and "honest" whereas the Darkglass is coloured and more aggressive.

While I primarily play rock, I took the approach with the build that I make the basic tone as clean as possible (currently looking at changing amps to something like a B|Amp to go further towards that idea) and then add colour from pedals. I already have a Darkglass VMT and B7K on my board, so I can add some of that flavour to it later if I want it, depending on what I'm playing.

As well as being influenced by MDBass for how the bass will look, I was swayed away from getting a Super P or J after playing an ABII with a wenge neck and Glock preamp.

I have a Dingwall Combustion that will arrive tomorrow. I have ordered a Hipshot Doublestop X-tender key. Will be tuning the bass standard B-E-A-D-G.

How far down can you drop the B string before the others start going sharp?

I saw a demo on a 4 string where Ed Friedland was going to Drop D then Drop C. The bass he had was a Musicman I think. I didn't notice anything in the demo.

I play praise and worship music and the music director seems to like the keys of Bb, Eb, and Ab

Eb is easy for the low note on any normal 5 stringer. I was thinking I might set the double stop to drop 1/2 step from B-Bb and set the second stop a minor third from B-Ab.

Anybody forsee problems with this besides me getting mixed up and playing the wrong note?

For the players that like the "P" experience, the Super P or J basses look great! But my thinking was like yours as I have an ABII on order with wenge neck, but with the Darkglass pre. I am a fan of that more aggressive attitude and mids control and I don't personally use pedals. But your use of the Darkglass B7K does amount to the same thing tonally and for those that like to use a pedal may be the better solution as it does give the best of both worlds.
