I like mine. I have green on my Super P and blue on my ABZ. They are not crazy bright like LEDs. They glow brightly but not crazy bright. And no way anyone sees them from more than a few feet away unless it's total darkness.

The luminlay dots (side+front) and lines on my fretless SJ5 keep me from getting lost when it's dark. Plus it looks pretty cool.
On a fretted I don't think it would be nearly as beneficial but getting them on the side can't hurt.

Does anyone have a good USA/stateside onlne source for Dingwall strings, standard nickle 5 string set. I was looking at the Dingwall store but the shipping to me is very high. I'd love a simpel international first class rate (around $5 for everything under 4#). Business have to take a different route I guess but $18-$20 shipping for a $34 set is rough.
Weird that your shipping is so high. I order 4 or 5 sets at a time from Dingwall directly and it's cheaper than anywhere stateside. BassStringsOnline had the best prices domestically last I checked. For me, BSO ended up almost $3 more per set.

I ordered all on the side. I would have to think about on the fretboard, I may see one and like it, but ...well, gonna have to ponder that some more but have initial dislike to the thought.

Does anyone with a ng-2 think they could achieve a tone such as the following?
I hear a lot of covers either in Nollys tone. Or these Dream Theater Covers, but for some stuff I'm still just gonna wanna bang 8th notes on the A string with out it being clangy and super modern sounding. I just wanna make sure these basses can do it all.

No bass really "does it all". I have a P bass for those things that require an actual P Bass.
The mid pickup in passive can sound P-like but not it's not crazy P.

I've had all three options.
My first bass was an AB1 and it had no fretboard markers on the face of then neck. It didn't matter to ME in the least...but it did to the people I played with. Many of whom came from non-traditional playing backgrounds, and sometimes I was sitting in with people or they were sitting in with us. Because the 5th string visually throws many people who are looking to your paws for 'key and chord cues'...also not having markers made it even more difficult. And that's not mentioning the fanning throwing people.
When I originally ordered the Rastaburst it was a blank board, but it became more obvious over the years between order and build that having some visual anchors would be important. That's why there are blocks at 5 and 12.
The newest adoptee has a full set of markers, and I have noticed that it's easier for people to cotton to what's going on when things go a bit free-form.
But they do not glow, right? The question was one of, to do, or not to do, luminlay inlays on the board. I'm not crazy about the idea of my board glowing. I do agree with you though, I like non luminescent fret markers. I have them on all of my boards in one form or another.
And, I'm also curious how long does the effect last once 'charged'? An hour, more, less?

A small flashlight on stage (which I always have anyway) should certainly do it between sets.
Ahh, that's some good info. So, any old bright LED source will 'charge' them up? No special light or color LED required. I too always have an LED light or close at hand but I'm thinking the iPhone flashlight would do in a pinch.

My Super J5 (passive) has flat peed the bed and I'm in full freak out!
It's got this warbling thing going. It sounds like a cross between a phaser and a primary note with a secondary tone slightly out of phase. I've tried 2 sets of Dingwall strings and a set of DR's. Intonation is spot on.
Also, it seems most prevalent in series, which is where it pretty much stays parked.
As info, I've tried multiple cords, different heads amps, etc. I can hear it through FoH as well. It's got to be electronics related but I have no idea how to trouble shoot from here on out.
I need to sort this before Thursday as I have a very busy play schedule.
Ideas? Ready go!

BB has it right, to do or not to do was the question. My time with the block markers was too short for me to say with any certainty. FWIW, the Master recommended blocks during the design process, he recommended not doing black, rather some understated but exotic wood. I explained my design goal was a bass in black and white only and the topic was dropped.
My ABI has a blank wenge board, but I primarily play it at home because it is passive and I often pick it up several times a day, so I like not continuously plugging and unplugging it. So maybe my block marker helping navigate while learning/doing vocals is a rationalization, I really never look at the face of the board, it's always the side dots if anything at all.
Maybe what I really need to do is to learn how to photoshop, and if I like the looks with blocks vs dots, make the decision that way. Can anyone tell me how hard photoshop is to learn?
