The picture is of a V4 at least. Someone should snatch that right up. I almost would, but I'm "upgrading" to Canadian models.

Edit: It's gone - I think it lasted about 90 minutes. Hopefully someone gets addicted to Dingwalls from it, much like I did from my first Combustion!

If the weather doesn't clear up here by Thursday, I'm gonna die. I'm supposed to be buying @Eugene B 's SP5, but we had sleet, rain, and snow tonight. I have class all day tomorrow. My only hope is that Thursday afternoon is clear enough for me to make a run to Rochester to seal the deal. And get some tasty vegan food at The Red Fern.

I had my heart set on a 4 and then realized all of the added bonuses of a 5. It's still 'just a P bass'. I mean, having a killer low B was the reason I got my first ABZ5.

I just emailed Sheldon to see what pickguards they're doing nowadays. I'm leaning towards white or cream if they can do it, or white pearl.

Did I mention I'm shopping around for someone to give it a refinish?

I've been wondering about tolerances on the nut, but I've been going to smaller and lighter strings, tuning E-C. I put a set of DR pure blues, .105-.045 with a.030 C on the Super J.

I figure a rattle on the open string is a sure sign I'm past the limit. On my first attempt, I had a tiny amount of buzz on the open G ( formerly the open D). On the Super J this is the longest string from nut to tuner, and they cut a groove in the headstock to allow it to wind lower on the peg. I rewound the string as low as I could get it, and since the strings have settled, no buzz. This early model of Super J didn't get a string tree on the head stock.

I'm about to go to an even lighter set of Pure Blues, 100-40 with the same 30 C string. We'll see how it goes. Maybe I'm worrying about .005 that won't make a difference. I sure like these strings, and I've got the lowest, easiest action ever. I'm excited to try the lightest set, since it will reduce the jump in size from the G to C strings.

Would adding a string tree, and nut pressure fix a rattle or am I up against the limit with oversized fret slots? Since I want to be able to go back to B-G, having a new nut cut is my last resort. Probably past my last resort.

Maybe I should install a string tree to increase down pressure over the nut? Has anybody added a string tree to their Super J?

I'd like to hear about fixes for oversized nut slots. Thanks!

Well, if you want "quick, cheap and easy", one thing I used to do was wrap the string where it's in the nut with tape. not pretty, but it works . The best thing to do would be to cut a new nut and replace it.

There's a couple chips in the finish, but I'm getting it redone in Fender Capri Orange from their International Color series. My favorite color by far.

@StreetScenes does look to do some phenomenal work. I don't doubt he'd be able to do a nice, non-flake finish as well. It's just a matter of having the right shade of orange for it. I just messaged him on Facebook, so we'll see!

I HAVE BEEN LUSTING OVER THAT ABZ FOR MONTHS! When the listing disappeared from their website, a small part of me died....

I put a Hipshot Double Stop on my Combustion. I have it set to Bb and Ab. Bb is very usable. Ab sounds good, but is very loose and I have to be careful how I pluck the string to keep from fret rattle. I bought this bass used, and I think it has standard Dingwall strings on it. I have a fresh set of Dingwall SS strings that I could throw on it to be sure.

I imagine that I am not the first to try this. What do others do? Do I need to order a custom set of strings from Kalium? What options do I have?

I should report in that the custom set of La Bella flats came in this past weekend (super fast shipping from BSO, and amazing customer service). They're a perfect fit. The B is actually wound almost a tiny bit too long; the full diameter string just comes into contact with the tuning post but doesn't actually wrap onto it.

I'm gonna adjust the truss rod, as the weather here in Syracuse has caused my neck to go crazy, combined with the string change... my action is a little high and I'm not sure if it's the new strings or my action to blame for the intonation on the B to be slightly off.

That said, I'm cruising out to pick up that SP5 tomorrow, so the ABZ might be getting neglected for the weekend!

I would suggest trying the Payson offerings first. I really liked the reduced core nickels, and the medium lights.

When I ordered a set from Kalium it was weeks of waiting. The Cirle K's strings worked okay, but I liked the Paysons and Dingwall nickels better.
