Super P crushed it with the funk band and the rock band on Friday.
It desperately needs new strings. I'm thinking of ordering a few sets: some good ol' fashion D'addario nickels, some of those new fangled Dunlop Super Brights, and maybe some DR's?

I just got my 5 pack from Payson... haven't yet tried them, but they should be on your list as possibilities as well. I'll report back once I string up one of my AB's with them.
As do I. Such a pretty, pretty color. I also like the Midnight Burst. And the blackburst that they do the sanding and such between. Drool.
Quick update on my Red Flame AB-I. Took it to rehearsal tonight with the Heavy Metal Opera. Did not take my Axe-Fx setup (I rarely do for rehearsal for this band), so I was playing through an SVT-7PRO and an 8x10.
BlueEQube in the *out* position, mid select on 2, mids dimed and bass/treble set mostly flat was ridiculously tasty tone. It was very, very sensitive to where I played and how much I did or did not dig in, too. I don't think I'll be changing anything on this bass at all.
That is great news! Glad it worked out so well...I had a feeling it was in the original set-up...cuz when I had it rockin out - it would vibrate the walls/ceiling/house horribly and dangerously..goooooood.

I didn't really dig the Payson nickels I tried on my ABZ5 a couple years ago.
I'm trying to pick sets that are the same gauges as the Dingwall branded ones, but of course that's hard to do.

Yep. That was me. I'm not ordering up quite yet, but I'm saving pennies until I get the roughly thirty five thousand of them needed for a set. I believe this is the only way to get a 'new' set of FD-3's in the older rectangular shell design (aka the Bartolini P2 shape and dimensions). Although Nordstrand WILL make them in other dimensions upon request.
For me they'll be retrofitted into the Voodoo Prima I recently received.
Speaking of which, I got a box from the great white north last week... New strings; a 4-way Dingwall switch (pretty cool design, no soldering needed, screw/binding posts for all connections) and the NOS 'old' Dingwall custom knob set that Sheldon kindly found for me. Here's a direct comparison of the old ones v. the new ones:
The newest version is in the center, and the older version are on the outside. I had sort of underestimated at how much larger the new ones are, they're quite a bit beefier. I'm looking forward to getting these lil' guys on the bass...and the added bonus is that the knob diameter seems to match the 'stock' top stacked knob that is on my bass/treble control, outwardly they'll all look the same.
Funny. I'm expecting these exact two items as well any day and look forward to your 4 way installation experience. Mine for a V3 Combustion upgrade. But, I am also mulling installing my East Uni pre instead as that gets me a 4 hole install with mid control and sweepable mid freq. great preamps. Decisions...

I unfortunately can't install the 4-way with the current original Bartolini's per Sheldon's guidance. It's currently sitting with the knob designated for it (larger pot shaft) waiting. Then basically the layout of the bass will be closer to an AB1 but with stacked Bass/Treble. Or mostly the same layout that my Zebra-Voodoo Rastaburst has, but without the pickup-internal series/parallel switching. I'll wire both pickups as series.
Empty, have you tried the PFNS-Medium Lights? Very close to the same gauges. Matter of fact the E was changed to a .098 after the art insert was completed. The C strings now have matching corresponding ball ends with slightly tweaked gauges for each of the sets now.
They're really nice for players looking for a more flexible feel and just a little more zing.
On a side note, since I brought up the John East pre I just wanted to add the in my limited experience I find many similarities between Mr. Dingwall and Mr. East in that while they both make some of the finest products in their respective areas they both always find the time to deal with hack schmucks like me and personally answer my dumbest questions to providing me with tech info and parts. Mr. East just internationally mailed me some cheap PC connectors to refurb one of his preamp boards. $5 worth of parts and shipping, could just have easily said no. But didn't. I read stories here of Mr. Dingwall doing this sort of thing all the time. In a world full of endless crappy service we would be wise to both support and publicly praise men and companies like this. Thank you.
XLs work great for me. Right amount of punch and woodiness for the p pup and the tension feels great.
We've prototyped, but have yet to release. They're actually on my medium scale fanned P bass. One of the reasons for the delay is most "stock" OTC sets fit the medium fanned scale.
I really liked the Payson reduced core nickel rounds on my AB-1's. The early Payson rounds were on the stiff side for me, but reduced core and medium lights are more to my liking.
On the Super I've used the sunbeams and the lowriders in nickel, currently, I'm super stoked on the DR pure Blues. Less tension than the low riders or sun beams, same outer wrap feel. And they come as light as 100-40's and a 30 C string. I haven't loaded the lightest gauge set yet, after weeks I'm still happy with the 105-45. Looking forward to setting up the lightest set.
Usually, I run TI Jazz flats, and for comfortable, slinky strings that's my bench mark. I know they aren't everybody's glass of malt. Like Islay scotches, you either love it or can't stand it.
I'm ready to try the super series scale Paysons whenever they come out! I've bugged Payson for his take on Super series strings, and I'm excited to see what he comes up with. Put me down for a set of nickels, lightest tension!
On my four string super, I ran TI's, Hellborgs, D'Adarrio xls, blue steels, any thing will fit the four strings.
