Man! At one point in my life I lived near Seattle. Such a beautiful area; if I could I would certainly join you.
Ok.. the Tone Capsule is in the AB1.. all I can say is that it is awesome.. now you will notice that the Blue Cube is still in there, but it is not connected to the preamp.. controls are vol, bass, stacked mids.. pups are wired parallel.. I used the same format as to wiring in a set of DCB pups..

There's plenty of 5 way rotaries out there. I don't know of any that are the solderless connector style of the Dingwall 4 way rotary, though.

Solderless is the key at least until I hear all the possible combinations available from the 4 way.

On an unrelated note, I keep my VM P5 at my for fun not gigging Classic Rock practice space. Yesterday we had to practice there while the Country band space is being modified. By the end of the second song I was experiencing pain in my left forearm (sustained some ligament strain due to a heavy snow year and a broken snow plow requiring a lot of shoveling). What's interesting is I haven't had any pain using the ABI. Lesson learned, I'm gonna haul it down there next practice.

Speaking of modifications... anyone ever think about designing a different power supply for their Dingwalls?

I'm thinking of using the giant cavity to hold a Li-Ion battery and a charging system for it. I'll have to measure out the cavity (note: is the cavity the same across all models? Combustion/ABs etc?) to see what size battery I could fit, but I imagine I could get several hundred hours out of a single charge... low charge cycle count (say I get 500 hours, that's only 18 charges per year if you left it on 24x7, so the battery would last at least more than 10 years).

I think this a great idea! It would be nice if there was a visual meter in there for state-of-charge. Maybe a momentary on switch for it.

I can use a shunt regulator and an LED that'll light up when the battery is below a given voltage - that is pretty simple (have done it in the past with other stuff). It'd be somewhat crude - basically, just turn on when the battery is low, basically a "I need charged NOW" light. I'll see if I can come up with something that might have two LEDs, one yellow for "I need charged soon" and red for "I'm pretty much dead".
 
What would be the cost of replacement for a lithium ion? My only hesitance would be the dreaded "oh crap I didn't charge my bass enough" and then you can't just swap out the 9v, you have to run in passive that night. I like my bass in passive anyway, but I'd think users might like to have a second battery they can swap out and keep docked when not in use. If so, sounds like a pretty sweet idea.

I think that would cover it and I also love this idea!
 
Alright, well, I have all of the bits lined up to do this to Pi. I'll get it done in time for the GTG I'm hosting in May, I think. I'll be doing some traveling soon which cuts into a lot of my hobby time, but so worth it :D. I'll at least have a prototype done for that. My thought is to, for now, get some cheap control cavity cover material and cut new since I'll be putting the LED there.

Some of the harder to get components came in stock today, so I jumped on it and ordered enough for one build. Total cost will be around $60 for the prototype (exclusive of shipping/taxes etc), but I'm using a different battery than what I was going to use at first. First one was going to last about 250 hours (~15% more than a standard 9v, but Dingwalls have two 9v), this new one will last about 600 instead (should be longer than the two in any Dingwall by about 20%). Charging will be via microUSB cable, but also have an option for a 5v power adapter (5.5mm barrel, so pretty much any standard 5v charger will work). Also designing it so it can be played while charging w/o any issues. I still have to dig through my parts drawers and see if I have the shunt regulator I want and resistors I need, but I think I do. I'll get started actually prototyping it mid to late April and if it comes together how I expect, will have it in Pi for my GTG in May. Pictures and such will be posted here as I progress of course.

With this iteration of the design, the battery compartment will be home to the charging/status electronics, and the battery will be mounted to the main cavity cover via double sided tape. The battery is like 7mm thick, so it'll barely be noticable.

For those counting, the entire system should knock off a couple dozen grams from the weight of the bass, too! :D
