Something like this would probably be my choice...it's a ATA case that fits around your case.

Doesn't break the bank and you only get the extra weight and bulk when you need it.

Hey guys!
I've tried for the first time some Dingwall basses locally: an ABZ 5 with swamp ash body, wenge neck and fingerboard and an NG2.
I LOVED the feel with the ABZ. Liked the tone as well. My only gripes are that the knobs / matte ash body didn't scream quality to me (nothing wrong with them actually, I'm just being very picky) and it had a slight dead spot in the usual 5-7th fret region of the G string, didn't expect it to be honest.
Being said that, I'd be potentially interested in an ABI.
Does anyone know what brands of flatwound string can you mount on these basses?
So far, I know that you can use TI flats 365 or La Bella 760FMB with the 42" winding lenght. Anything else really?

Give those knobs a chance. ;) They're made in shop by Sheldon and they were sculpted/designed by Dingwall as well. They're actually a 'hard rubber' that has some give and grip to them so that they feel nice and have some traction when you're on stage. Not too many other people out there making such things in house.

Once I have a bass set where I want it tone wise, I rarely if ever touch those knobs again!

You know I can be a fusspot about stuff. The pictured knobs are actually two different designs. I really like the earlier/smaller-diameter ones when playing although I don't think anyone probably noticed a huge difference besides me. I do twist them a bit here and there...so as part of the stuff I've been doing with the Voodoo, Sheldon went back to the 'outdated parts bins' and found me a set of the early version. One thing I really do believe though is that in terms of materials you chose the best one for the job at hand...and I think that these are quite nice. Also for those who haven't priced them...they're not 'cheap' by any standard, given that they're small production, custom design, have brass inserts, etc.

When I converted the AB1 over to the Tone Capsule (good move I feel), I should have put the John East knobs I had on it, but like a dummy, I let those knobs go on a bass that I sold.. instead.. it has some Spector knobs on it..

It can be a rabbit hole. I currently have a stacked bass/treble on the V/P since I was certainly not drilling any control holes and the original Bartolini preamp had a stacked bass/treble...But what I did find is that the slightly smaller diameter Dingwall knob fits and matches the bottom ring size of the original knob on the stack.

By sometime tonight I'll have the bass wired with the pickups in series internally (no switches) and the standard Dingwall 4-way switch happening.

Yeah.. I had to open one hole.. for the stacked knob.. I didn't ad a blend like so many do with the Tone Capsule.. well it is useless to me, cuz I always keep a blend knob in the middle.. don't hate me.. it is just the way I am!

I started out with the blend on this bass...that was my first move after pulling out the passive VVT it came wired as (the original preamp had died, and the last owner chose to go with a simple passive Jazz setup). I've never had a bass with a blend and figured I'd give it a shot since the Barts didn't work with the 4 way. Didn't love it. It sat in the center too.

Went on a bit of a tear recently. As some of you probably noticed, I'm rather...indecisive when it comes to selling. I've loved my Super series basses but my black one lacked a bridge pup and my red one, while terrific, was red, and red isn't my favorite color. So I've listed them several times only to go into panic attack mode and later pull them. Well, the original owner of the black one contacted me and asked if I'd send it back to him as it was sentimental and he regretted letting it go. Sent that back to him, and picked up Smeet's beautiful SPJ5. Mean time, WhirledPeas has been after me for my red one for quite some time, so decided I may as well let him have it and go after my personal favorite. Happy to say I was able to arrange a deal with the owner and I now have this guy coming.

So so stoked. Two Super P's out, two Super P's in. Reminds me, gotta leave feedback for @smeet! Sorry to leave you hangin, buddy! Took the TI's I got from @graphics1988 and strung the Chrome Blue up and it's thumping hard! Also reversed it back to normal and loving it.

I've only been offered a handful of flying gigs and I didn't trust those to be legit (one off type deals, with questionable promoters). Regionally we do our own transport. I'd use a stock hardshell case for more than that...although I have a few well trashed hard-shells from road use from my PD (pre-dingwall) days. I also threw a bass (in it's case) at someone at one point, and the bass was just fine. Funny, you only have to do that once and people start paying attention. ;)

Sheldon says avoid the open cavity type. I also use the SKB-44 for my Super J and put some t-shirt to pad the space to keep it from moving.
The other thing to look out for (even on the SKB-44) is the occasional hard line in the (what do you call it - fur?)

For a custom fit (though a bit more dough):
Guitar & Bass 1/4" or 3/8" ATA Cases w/Uncut Foam Layers - 3 Sizes!

Might want to be careful with that Sharpie though (you'll see the picture I mean).

However, the long neck brace should keep it in position and you can add some high density foam inserts to keep it from moving around. A buddy of mine has an open cavity (wood) hardshell case for his Combustion and it fits really well. I am not sure what it is, but the open cavity type ones can work.

Actually, the older SKB Freedom case fits my SJ5 like a glove. That came with my ABI a long time ago before they switched to the Levy's gig bags.
