On the SJ-5 I'm running DR Hellborgs, a nickel four string set with a new Dingwall B (.127) string. I've got the set of stock Dingwall strings that came on it in stainless. I'm not sure if they are the "new" SJ-5 strings. The Dingwall strings worked just fine, but I like the feel of the nickel and love the Hellborgs on the SJ-5 and on the SP/J 4. The balance between the Hellborgs and the Dingwall B isn't perfect, the B hits really hard, but I only use it for flavor, I'm not on it constantly. Since they are already cut and wound, I'll be switching between the sets and comparing them for sound.

The Hellborgs are pretty reasonable pricewise.

Sheldon's new B string for the Super J-5 works great, and fits perfectly. I tune down a 1/2 step, and the B will hold up tuned down to A. There's a ton of string related talk on the Dingwall forum.

I'll be playiing a Dingwall for the first time on Friday. My wife is speaking at a conference in San Diego and I'm going along for the ride. While she is speaking on Friday, I'll be visiting Bass San Diego!

I have gotten very comfortably into EBMM's these days and I have several. I have never plaed a Dingwall and quite frankly, the fanned frets worry me.

On the other hand, everyone seem to think that the transition is no big deal (not sure I buy that) and EVERYONE loves the Dingwal playability and tone. Who knows, I might come home with a combustion.

No sue about it tho ... you guys are the Dingwall experts. Reassure me!

...it finally arrived!! I can't stop smiling! I have to admit this is the best bass I've ever played! The tone is ridiculous. It's got thunderous low and yet it has a lot of clarity. It plays like butter and weighs as much as a feather with absolutely no neck dive

I've read the little manual about care and maintenance of the instruments. I guess mine is an oil finish, but where can i get lemon oil for the body and paste wax for the neck?
I'll ask folks around here, but some input from my fellow dingwallers is never bad ^^

Can I get a number?

Nice bass! And a big "I got a Dingwall smile!"

Kiwi neutral shoe polish for the back of the neck wax. You can use it on you leather strap too, and everything will smell nice.

Lemon oil furniture polish, there are many brands, at most any general merchandise, grocery or drug stores.

Weirdest thing about getting used to a five string, for me was, the right hand being on the wrong string, just kind of a "foggy spot". A couple weeks and things will be fine.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new bass. We need to update that booklet.

The body and neck are finished with a satin polyurethane. A good quality guitar polish is all you need to keep it clean. Avoid furniture polish.

Bought it in February, didn't play it enough...Now the economy is hittin' me hard.

Is this true of the ABI Elites? Mine is SN #3865.

No this is a recent development on the finish side.

For the Elites guitar polish on the body, lemon oil or kiwi wax on the necks and lemon oil on the fingerboard.

Ahh, thanks. Lemon oil on the maple neck? I've heard that's bad for it... but I've heard a lot of things on the Internet that aren't true either.

A few drops lemon oil on a paper towel to remove the grime is OK on a maple neck.

Hey guys,

I've a question about your muting techniques. My dingwall is my 1st 5 string bass and would like to know how do you mute your strings.

I've been practicing the floating thumb, but I can notice some harmonics ringing when I play using my Mac(direct) and Headphones. I can't hear any if I play through my amp, is that normal?

I guess you would call my technique the moveable anchor. I use both my fretting hand and my thumb to mute the strings. It takes some practice and I still get ringing occaisionally depending on how hard the passage is. Use whatever works best for you. Also recording direct really puts your playing under a microscope and you might not notice the ringing as much when you are actually playing something through your amp.
