I was hoping that someone could give me a tone comparison from the ABZ to the ABI to the ABII. Looking around, it seems that i will never have the oppurtunity to sit down and play all three in one place.

I've read that the ABII is more aggressive than the ABI. This is what im looking for. The "option" to be overly aggressive. I like the simplicty and the idea of passive electronics on the ABI.

Also, how much of a price difference between the three. Im not looking for looks as much as tone.

Last question... Any idea how long the wait is for one of these?

Again, sorry if all this has been already addressed. I looked around for a bit and only found tid-bits of what im looking for.

Welcome to our world Bean639, glad you're joining us! I'll chime in here with what I know of each model you're interested in. IF I AM MISPEAKING PLEASE SOMEONE JUMP IN HERE AND CORRECT ME!!

The ABZ shares the AB1 platform, only Sheldon uses the pickups from the new combustion series and maple boards. Finish is a little less dramatic, no dipped in glass finishes on the ABZ's

The AB1 comes in passive mode with FD3 pickups (passive) volume, tone pickup selector and mid cut boost switch. Nicer finishes available on the AB1 and ABII

ABII's range from plain grain woods with oil finishes, to some of the new ones that look more like a Prima than anything else, exotic woods, fancy paint jobs, etc. ABII's can be ran passive or active. Aw heck, here is the link to the Dingwall website that will explain available options on each bass better than I can.

I'm with ya buddy. I tried a set of nickles, they were okay but I missed the sparkle my voodoos gives me in a three piece band. To be honest I probably didn't give them enough shakedown time, I took them to a gig, played them for five hours and switched back the next day. A little weird thing too, my fingers started turning blackish green from using them, and my fingers actually smelled of nickle! Not an "eewwwhh" feeling but "I'll be darned" feeling.

Oh well, that's why they make so many hammers, everyone likes a different one.

thanks for the response! i have visited the website and read through all the wood and pickup differences. I think i was wondering if anyone has actually played all three of these basses and had an actual "tonal description" or a review of the different respones the basses have compared to each other. i understand there are many variables that are in this equation, but i fiqured a general question is a good place to start.

also... is it against the rules to ask what pple pay for things??? i often see this question unanswered on this forum. I know could just email dingwall and ask myself. i guess im just not ready to open that box yet.

Yes, in fact you did, thank you for reminding me and thank you for letting me try them so cheap! I moved them along to someone else wanting to try them, so that was a gracious offer on your part, at least two more people got to see what they were about before ordering them.

Hi Bean 639,
The prices all fluctuate depending on what you want on your bass. I understand the ABZ street price is around 2K, the street price on the AB1 is around 2950 AFAIK, and the ABII can be found 3300to 5000 depending on appointments. Here is a good website to start, certainly not the only one mind you. PM me and I will send you a list of all the Dingwall dealers I am aware of that currently have stock.

That's really the thing I love about the nickels, my fingers smell funny after playing. The turning black part is just an added bonus.

Truth is I like a bit less sparkle, a little darker tone, and the slicker feel.

Stainless kind of grabs skin a bit more.

Bean 639, welcome. The Dingwall site has all the models laid out in a spread sheet, but you've probably been there and done that. For tone, I can only compare the AB-1's with the Super J's. My preference is the passive tones on all these. The preamps are cool, and have tons of possibilities. I use mine to jack things up for louder parts or solo's, but mostly they are off. The AB-1's have plenty of attitude and a huge range of sounds.

If you want info on prices, head over to the TB classifieds and put Dingwall in as a search. You'll be able to check out prices going back for months if not years. I've never had a problem buying used from the talkbass community. Every used Dingwall I've purchased has been in excellent to mint condition. I don't think Dingwall lets anything that is less than perfect out of the shop. And then the owners baby them.

Keep your eyes peeled and be patient. I've seen Ab-1's start out asking under $1500. It seems to be a buyers market in highend basses with the hard times economy.

Me three.

I prefer nickel strings on other basses and have for a long time. I've really grown to love the balance and tension of DW strings. I played through three sets of the first batch of Fanned Nickels and I never could get used to the B string, it felt a little pudgy and lethargic. There were also aesthetic considerations, having a flat black headstock the black silk trim sort of "disappeared" in front of it. The fact that the trim was completely uneven gave the appearance of strings "growing" out of random places in my headstock. Not a huge deal, but annoying.
There were situations where the heavier sounding G and D strings were advantageous, but that's not where I make my living...so to speak.

Actually, I'm 90% sure ABZs use "regular" FD-3 pups in bigger FD-3A shells. Also, ABZs don't come fretless. Can anyone of knowledge confirm these two issues?
