Hey y'all! Picked up my first Dingwall last week, an Afterburner II... honestly, I was underwhelmed at first. However, after adjusting the pickups and getting the jack and battery connectors fixed, the bass now sounds like what I was expecting - beefy, thick, and full. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's a meatier version of the tone I got from my active Warwick Corvette 5, which isn't surprising given the woods used.

Also, if any of the current list can provide a picture of themselves with their Dingwall bass and a matching Dingwall longboard, you shall get special notice on the list.

If anyone is interested in having Sheldon make them a longboard, either matching or not...should contact him at the shop. He's been working on them this spring and summer.

I'm finding it very interesting that the ABII and my Mesa Carbine amps aren't getting along very well down low (very flubby and undefined), but it loves my GBE 1200 through the same cabs. What rigs are you playing your Dingwalls with?

The MESA M6 has a high pass filter that takes out much of the deep lows that the Dingwall can produce. The Genz is similar but does have the option of the warmer FET channel. Both give great high end details, especially the GBE1200.

Due to the wide response of the bass I like these basses with amps like the Mark Bass, EA etc that leave the tone uncoloured through open voiced cabs like Bergantino.

I'm running a GK 1001 rb 2 with a couple of modified (larger ports) TL-606 homebuilts, loaded with Eminence 3015's.

I think there are still more lows to be had.

Another cab project in the works with a 3015 LF.

BurningSkies has taken the plunge and gone the Greenboy route.

I'm probably headed that way myself. I'll be able to test the lows side by side once the new cab is built.

IME/IMHO, Genz-Benz has a much more aggressive high-pass filter (meaning, it takes out more of the deepest lows) than Mesa.

Yes indeed, and this is one of the major reasons I love these amps - tough for a soundman to make you rumbly and overbearing if he doesn't have those frequencies to start with (although playing a Thumb also helps) Regardless of whether the Pull Deep is engaged or not and regardless of where I have the bass set (knob or graphic), the Carbines, to my ear, just don't seem to make this bass shine through my Genz cabs. Probably just personal taste, as I play my 1200 with the LF extend engaged and set at about 11:00; low-end control with all pieces of my rig is a deal-breaker for me, as I like it clean, tight, and focused. That being said, the tone through my GBE 1200 is extra-tasty - lovin' it

I find that when I run my Combustion with my Shuttle 6.0, I have to bump up the bass control about 3 or 4 clicks and engage the Bass Boost pushbutton to get satisfactory lows. Wwen I tested the TC Electronic Staccato '51 with their RS210 cab, I found the bass response better without tinkering, but I did have to fool with the midpoints on Lo Mid and Hi Mid to get a sound I liked with the Dingwall.

Agreed, I like the tight low end these amps produce. I also agree than the STL6 and STL9 seem to have different low end response, it seems that Genz have changed or lowered the high pass filter. There is a very transparent nature to the Genz Amps that really opens up the harmonic content of your bass, also I find the FET preamps on Genz amps to be warmer sounding than the Tube preamps.

Yeah, I generally run my Shuttle 6.0 with the global bass-boost on. Ironically, I leave it off - and boost the global high-boost - with my Shuttle 9.0.

I do believe that the 9.0 was designed for more bottom end by redefining the high pass. I know there's been some discussion of it here on TB. Here's a quote from one of them by Agedhorse, who works for GB:

"The Shuttle 9.0 is very similar to the 6.0, but again has a very slightly lower HPF frequency because we have additional headroom to work with and it's unlikely that this amp would be used (at high volumes or extended low end) with sub-compact cabinets, so we have more margin to work with. The 9.0 pairs nicely with cabinets from the compact (like Neo-X 212) on up, but I caution against expecting such performance with sub-compact speakers like the STL series (or those by other manufacturers) since the amp has too much power and runs the risk of overdriving models without adequate power handling and LF excursion limiting tuning. The 9.0 would be an amp to consider for all styles provided it's paired up to a cabinet that's also suitable. ... All in all, the differences in voicing and LF response between the Shuttle 6/9 and Max 6/12 is really very, very small. Some is due to a perception because there is additional power available which allows for more headroom when playing harder. IIRC, the difference is between 5 and 7Hz, there will be maybe as much variation in speaker response & tuning given the tolerances of the average drivers in a production sampling. "

There may be more details, but there are several huge 9.0 threads to pore through. Haven't played through a 9.0 myself. I know that I've never run my 6.0 bass control past 3 o'clock with any bass, although this past Sunday I heard a massive amount of low end coming from my amp and wondered why. Then I realized I'd accidentally turned the Combustion bass control all the way up. Still, the Shuttle handled it.

I see that someone has an Afterburner-1 in the somewhat hard to find 4-string version up for BIN on eBay for less than you'd pay for a Combustion. It's an older (2003) model, but looks to be in great shape, and about HALF of what you'd pay for a new one and probably about 500$ less than a used one normally.

Hello, fellow Dingbats! I guess I joined TalkBass a while ago, but I just started exploring yesterday. I'm happy to say I'm a Z1 owner. A came to be a Dingwall user by an odd path. My main bass for years has been a handmade Dale Bluebond that uses Bartolini pickups. Through years of heavy use the Bluebond was getting long in the tooth and, wanting something that had a similar (phenomenal) range, I started at the Bartolini site to see who else built basses with the same pickups. When I followed the link to Dingwall and keyed into what the concept was, I was immediately sold. It took a while to locate the bass I wanted, but I've had this one for about a year and a half. I love the fret design and the bass' ability to go from warm and mellow to a nasty growl all based on what the right hand is doing. I primarily play through an Ashdown rig: ABM 500 RC EVO III head and a USA 414H cabinet. The Ashdown is warm and rich for a British amp, but really loves to get growly with the Dingwall.

My ABII is absolutely spoiling me... I've been playing Genz stuff for years because it really nails the tone I'm looking for, but this bass through my rig has really taken it to another level entirely. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but the combination of bass and rig just sound like they were made specifically for each other. Simply awesome.

Can I join? Here's mine:

Bought it from a friend who changed the preamp to a J-retro. I like the way it sounds but I think the gold color doesn't match the rest of the bass , so I might switch it back to the stock preamp, or try a different one (Audere maybe?). I love this bass!
