Bought it from a friend who changed the preamp to a J-retro. I like the way it sounds but I think the gold color doesn't match the rest of the bass :D, so I might switch it back to the stock preamp, or try a different one (Audere maybe?). I love this bass!

Hey polsab78, nice bass! Why don't you talk about the preamp with Sheldon? I'm sure he'd have some informed input if you explain what you're looking to do...

If the on-board preamp has an active/passive switch (I don't know if J-Retro's have that option) and if you like the passive sound, then it's a good bet you'll like the Audere as they are one of the most transparent on-boards out there.

You'll get more treble clarity and presence with the Audere compared to passive, as one would expect.

I know that I'm not really as active in these boards as I used to be but may I apply for (another) number? ;)

PS I am joking over the Dingwall Club number. But I am NOT joking about how GREAT of a bass the Combustion is

You know what would probably be very helpful, FRB...is if you'd maybe do a detailed comparison of the entry level Dingwalls, the Combustion in comparison to the Afterburner I, or a ABZ, if you have one. I think many bass players might be on the fence when it comes to buying one or the other of these instruments. Especially since you can sometimes find a used AB that's not much more than a new Combustion.

It would be great to have some fairly accurate un-candycoated comparison to both the instruments' physical features as well as the tonal aspects and ergonomics of the instruments. I would do so, but haven't had a chance to handle a Combustion yet.

I am honored to be asked to provide a detailed comparison of entry level Dingwalls (just don't own an ABZ, yet!!!). Just be patient for few days more, before I chime in. So far this has not been my year, but I am not complaining; it could (and can be) much worse.

Still, to get back to the comparison, I keep an "old" AB-II (non-chambered) next to my bed to play before I go to sleep, if that says something about the quality and tone of the "not-so-expensive" Dingwalls. Before that, it was an AB-I and then the GL.

In fact I'm leaving right now for a rehearsal/recording session wiht my Combustion!!!

Could I please get a number? My ABZ just came in!

Great looking ABZ! How do you like it so far? I love the look of the maple fretboard...

I know no pics no bass, but I have a Dingwall AB-II. It's so cool, you can barely tell it's not a normal scale bass!

Hey Hollywars, I think I've seen you over on Sheldon's boards too. No pics? :atoz:

So far I'm loving it! It is my first five string and my first Dingwall. The five strings have been harder to get used to than the frets. Actually, the fanned frets weren't an issue at all. I'm really impressed with variety of tones I can get out of it considering it is passive.

Just think of the 'B' string (assuming you BEADG-tune) as a thumbrest long enough for your brain/hands to adjust.

I took to 5's like a fish to water -- 4's are now just weird to me -- don't even want to go back.

Hello everyone,
i've been thinking about buying a new bass and dingwalls have caught my eyes. I can spend about $2000, so I decided to check prices and found out that the ABZ series costs about that.

I was wondering if it is possible to order an ABZ through Dingwall's website and ask to add a preamp.

I couldn't find much information about their playability or sound, so any advice/comment would be very welcome.

My other option would be a custom Stambaugh.

Thanks,
Iván

Hey Ivan,

It is fully possible to order directly from the Dingwall shop, unless you have a dealer nearby. So no worries there :smug:

I don't own an ABZ, but people say that it's punchy and of light weight, comparing to other Dingwalls. I can't say any more, but I'd love to hear what other people say.

Ordering a preamp for an ABZ is not possible. You could add a preamp yourself if you really feel you need one. However, I often play my AB-II passive; Dingwall pickups have outstanding output, clarity and dynamic range by themselves. You could get an ABZ and later see if you need a preamp?

Thanks for the info Bocete.

Earlier today I checked the dingwall forum looking for some comments about strings and found that many players use DW or 4 strings from a different brand, but with a DW B string.

Also, user Funkshwey supplies nickel strings. So I was wondering, what kind of strings do you guys use and where do you usually get them from?

Thanks,
Iván

Most of us are regulars over there ;)

I'm not sure if many use regular strings, apart from the B string. Of my head, I can't name one member doing so (my apologies to any such Dingwallers :D).

People do regularly use different brands on SuperJs, but I'm not so sure about long scale DWs. I do remember people trying different brands, and many brands do fit with the B string excluded, but I'm not sure how many people use those combinations regularly.

As for those nickel strings, I remember only one person trying them and going back to stock Dingwall strings afterward; other people have liked them. I haven't tried them, but I think I'd like them too.

I'm in a similar position as you are, having no dealer available in my part of the world. I have bought a couple of spare string sets to be shipped with my bass, and they're still here. If I were to buy new strings (either from Dingwall or Funk), it would probably be possible to ship them from the US via USPS for not much money.

I'm using a variety of nickel strings: Funkshwey's Labella nickel for fanned frets on the AB-1. I love them, they are solid and punchy, but darker than the Stainless steel Voodoos. They work great for me, and I tune everything down a half step.
I just ordered another couple sets, 5 and 6 string, Funkshwey is a great guy to deal with, he'll get you strings no problem.

Thomastik Infelds on the AB-1 6er. These came with the bass from RichC, and they are a nice nickel set. They'll be replaced with the Labella, but only to get everything set up the same.

I'm running DR Hellborgs on the Super J's with a Dingwall B string on the 5. Hellborgs only come in 4 string sets at the standard length.

I'm over in the all nickel, all the time, crowd. If I could get Hellborgs for the long scale AB's I'd use them on everything.

I've got a box of stainless steel Voodoos 5ers that I got from Dingwall ( they sell boxes of 5) and won't be using anytime soon, and a a 4 and 6 string set of Voodoos. Anybody who needs a set, hit me by PM and I'll get them to you at cost. I'm over stocked.

Sorry if this has been addressed already....

I was hoping that someone could give me a tone comparison from the ABZ to the ABI to the ABII. Looking around, it seems that i will never have the oppurtunity to sit down and play all three in one place.

I've read that the ABII is more aggressive than the ABI. This is what im looking for. The "option" to be overly aggressive. I like the simplicty and the idea of passive electronics on the ABI.

Also, how much of a price difference between the three. Im not looking for looks as much as tone.

Last question... Any idea how long the wait is for one of these?

Again, sorry if all this has been already addressed. I looked around for a bit and only found tid-bits of what im looking for.

This is my first post on TB, hope i didn't break any rules. :)
