Did a rehearsal Wed evening for playing at church sunday. Filling in for the regular guy. I took my combustion to practice. I haven't played there in a while and both myself and the sound guy noticed that the higher notes (higher than C on the G string) sounded thin and not full. I have some pedal eq'd wrong or something. Running both pickups in parallel or series didn't seem to change the sound. I have a Tone Hammer DI pedal and am going out to the church PA. Quiet stage with in ears.

I can't figure out what frequencies to tweek. Any recommendations?

If the sound guy had more time, I would have done some trial and error testing. They have a digital board and will save my eq curve on the board for recall next time once we get it right. Not sure it is the board eq though.

I can thicken up my signal using my POG, but haven't been using it much with the Dingwall.

Do you think it could be the string or a set up issue? Does it sound thin when run through another amp, when it's run passive vs. Active? If so, I would look into the string/set up.

I played at another church 2 weeks ago with my own setup and pa. I just a little kickback amp for a montior and send most of my signal out to my pa which has 2 K-Subs and K-12's. I didn't notice a thin sound on the higher strings when I played there. We did a song where I played very high and it was solid.

This is the song we played. That isn't our band obviously. :)


My Combustion ROCKED that song. On the heavy part, we shook that little church like it hasn't been shook before.

As far as active or passive, I don't know. I like the active so much I don't usually use passive, but can double check.

Hmmm. Well maybe it is in the signal chain then. Do the same notes played on other strings sound weak? Given that the fundamental will be the same, and harmonic content similar, they should react similarly if it is some sort of suppression of higher frequencies in the signal chain.

Same notes on thicker strings are not quite as bad, but weaker still.

So many things you can get, just a matter of what works with your budget (or more likely what you can stretch your budget to accommodate). :D Gets dangerous having the order sheet around too long, though, I went from starting off looking at an ABZ to ending up with an X-top AB2 3X. Definitely feel like it was the right move, though, and it was cool seeing the glamour shot make it up on their Facebook, too!

Finally getting a chance to try Payson strings. I have a set of the reduced core on my ABZ and a set of the medium lights on my Voodoo Prima.

So far, I really like them! I played the reduced cores at an open mic on Thursday night and while it wasn't through my rig, I really liked the harmonic content. They have a reduced level of the upper harmonic content that I thought worked really well with the Ash/Maple ABZ. The G in particular is nice in that it is a bit heavier in gauge and seems to provide a stronger fundamental and a more solid overall feel without increased tension.

After just a few hours of play time, they have acquired a really nice smooth feel, and neither of my basses have required even a tweak to the setup from the Dingwall medium lights.

The medium lights sound great on my voodoo, and have me back in love with it again. Of course, any new set of strings probably could have done that given how dead the old ones were! :woot: They have also become very smooth in about an hour of noodling around.

One thing I have noticed is that the very weak spots I had on these basses, i.e where you hit the note and you get more harmonic content and a shorter fundamental, have totally disappeared! I know that sounds dodgy, but I noticed right away playing certain songs.

Anyway, so far I'm very pleased. I will provide an update after a few weeks.

The pair of 410 cabs are old friends; I've been gigging them since 1999.

I'd love to find a more portable solution, but they've always gotten the job done for me and their height actually allows me to keep stage volume DOWN.

Check out the volume settings on my GK...
