Dingwall Owners Club

I wouldn't buy a modded bass for the same price as a stock one but that's just my personal opinion. I don't think it's a big deal and probably would consider it myself if I were in your shoes but...... I personally don't want somebody else's frankenbass. And this coming from a guy who defretted a one of a kind bass. Lol. Although I have posted it for approximately 60% of what I paid. Soooo.......

All that said, I guess if it's a $10000 bass I strongly feel this way. If it's a $800 bass not nearly as much.
What ever you do. Congrats on the new bass. ;)
Like I said, there might be a few anal retentive types that.......... Oh, hi Nate!! :woot::laugh:

A question to you folks. Has anyone swapped necks between Afterburners?

The trans black ABZ 5 3x with a maple/wenge neck that I just purchased has the series/parallel pickup switches. I wish my trans blue ABZ 5 3x had them. My trans blue has the wenge/wenge neck with Luminlay side and front dots which I really like. Am I nuts to swap the necks? I would have a local luthier do the swap and setup.

Since I enjoy buying and selling basses on TB, would you buy a used Dingwall from a TB'r who disclosed such a swap?

There were a couple people who had swapped necks on the Dingwall forums. In fact, the neck on my Super PJ 4 is not the original that was on the bass. Original owner got a different one from Sheldon.

Yes, I would want it disclosed (as the serial number is on the neck), but I'd have no problem buying a Dingwall with a swapped neck as long as it is a Dingwall neck. Now if you found/made a fanned fret neck yourself that wasn't Dingwall or had been modded to fit, then I agree the value is now reduced.

Lol. Not at all!!! Hahaha.

Hi Bob. ;).

Everyone has there own retentivities.(is that a word). Hehehh.
Like I did mention though it can be situational.
40 years down the road. Do you think a modded bass or an original will be worth more? Does that even really matter?

Thanks for the kind words ustaba.
So far thing are looking good. The tank is a bit murky after doing some clean up. Pulled some plants out and filtered what I could off of the top but so far no casualties.

I don't know if I posted this here... been spending a little more time in my home "studio" lately. The room isn't at all finished, but I have two albums I'm actively working on for two bands, two more in the pipe coming, and some demo-y kind of stuff for some of the products I use.

Invalid Link Removed

That's my trusty ol Afterburner 1. I swapped the guts with Pi (blue AB1), so this one now has the P-tone. Fractal Audio AX8 used for live, and Axe-Fx II used for tracking. Still super, super happy with the Payon strings, as you can probably tell from the stack of them :D
Neat setup!

Ive unfortunately been around toxic fumes and smoke far more then any human should.

It's not good stuff.
Again.... dog farts may be worse.
Toxic chemicals are far worse than many think. When I was younger I worked on a riverboat pushing a very long tow of acetone filled barges. Breathed that stuff night and day. To this day I get around even a whiff and I just about pass out. YUCK!

Ok, the FDV values are 11K ohms, the Ptone is 16.19K. Does anyone know what ballpark FD3s are? And generally speaking, what difference does it make to tone, volume, etc?

I actually have both in the SJ3X currently with the P Tone in the neck and FDV's in Middle and Bridge.

Output is very even through the settings actually, though obviously the P Tone sounds totally different than the FDV.

Can anybody comment on the feel of a long scale vs medium scale DW 5 string?

I'm considering grabbing a Super series bass but I'm having a hard time imagining a huge difference vs it and a traditional 35" scale bass. It's pretty night and day between the long scale and 35" scale.

I do wish there was a long scale P and J with 18mm spacing. That would make this much easier :)

My first Dingwall was a long scale Afterburner. I loved it and I was really reluctant to try the Super series. I kind of wanted one, but I was afraid of being disappointed in the medium scale. Then a completely irresistible Super PJ popped up and I went for it. To say it changed my perspective would be an understatement. I loved it even more than the Afterburner and really it felt nearly identical to play except that it was a little more comfortable and natural for me on the first four frets. Maybe a little difference on the B string, but the quality of any Dingwall is just so high that it is just as nice and playable to me as the long scale. Obviously it comes down to individual taste, but I would highly recommend the Super series. That's all I own now, a Super PJ and a Super J.

I felt like the necks were very close in feel, and the scale length difference wasn't a big deal. The big difference was going from 18mm to 19mm string spacing.

I checked out the specs page, and the necks seem to have the same dimensions and profiles.

For me, the super series felt more like home. The AB-1's have moved on. I kept the Super J5 with a P pup, and string it E-C.

I also started with a sweet ABI5. I thought it was fantastic, but wanted to try the medium scale as I started having problems on fast Country 1-4 fret walking bass lines (I'm 65 next May), and planned on keeping the ABI for my Rock band. So I got a SP5, and game over, sold the ABI and had a SJ5XXX built. The long scales are great, but I personally think the B is little, if any better, and for me, the medium scales are perfect. I hate to play anything else.

So I guess there's nothing for it but to swap them in and out and see how they sound to my ears, through my rigs and in band settings, sounds fun!

If anyone has a 5er non-installed FD3, can you look at the bottom and give me the ohm value? PM is fine. Thanks.

And since I'm here, had band practice last night, and I'll say it again, I love that SPJ5, gives up nothing to my SJXXX, so if you are waiting for a used SJXXX to pop up (good luck with that), or hesitate to order a build and wait, jump on a used SPJ5 or SJ5 (maybe pop a Ptone in the SJ5), I promise you will be happy.
