Dingwall Owners Club

sorry, i am missing some info - new rotary? what does it do different than old one?
It's been that way for several years though, no? The discussion is making it sound as if the D-bird has another "new" rotary?
That's entirely possible, I'm not in that loop!

Sorry ya'll, thought I was clear; The D-Bird does indeed have an entirely different 4-way rotary than the standard 3X.

Settings are: all three pickups (middle/bridge in parallel and wired in series w neck), middle soloed, middle and bridge in parallel & bridge soloed from front to back.

Is the new rotary available to order? I have a ABZ 3x on the way that it will be perfect for. My other 3X has a P-Tone so don't think I'll get on for that.

Since you can order the standard 4-way from the online shop I'd assume you can order the D-Bird version as well, but I'd email them directly to ask.

Is it an actual different rotary, or the same physical rotary switch, but just wired differently? For instance, I'd like to wire my 3x:
1) All 3, series
2) Neck + Bridge, series
3) Neck + Bridge, parallel
4) Middle + Bridge, series

Sheldon et. al. won't wire it as such at the shop, so I'll just do it when it shows up, using the standard 4 way rotary they have now.

If there indeed is a different rotary, I'll have to talk to my dealer to see if they can swap mine out before it ships - which is hopefully soon!

If anyone has a 5er non-installed FD3, can you look at the bottom and give me the ohm value? PM is fine. Thanks.

And since I'm here, had band practice last night, and I'll say it again, I love that SPJ5, gives up nothing to my SJXXX, so if you are waiting for a used SJXXX to pop up (good luck with that), or hesitate to order a build and wait, jump on a used SPJ5 or SJ5 (maybe pop a Ptone in the SJ5), I promise you will be happy.

This?

NOT my pic. Found it online.

I wonder if Dingwall has considered adding a switch / expanding rotary to create more options?
Ie a 6 - 8 point rotary, or a switch to Use existing 4 point to create 8 choices (ie 3 in series, 3 in parallel, neck solo, middle solo, bridge solo, front 2 series, front 2 parallel, back 2 series, back 2 parallel, bridge & neck in series, bridge & neck parallel)

I imagine they have picked the 4 best options & the series parallel switches they have currently may cover similar ground but... it would make for a ton of
Choices ...

I've had my ABZ 3X (P-Tone in the neck position) for a while now and it is amazing the tones I can get out of this thing. I love how the different positions make a noticeable difference in tone, even to the audience. When I mix in Chorus and Flange affects it is even more dramatic.

These 3X Dingwalls are genius. When I watched the NAMM 2017 video, I gather Sheldon agrees :)

A couple of things, I do flip the switches during gigs being in a Country band that plays Classic Country, Classic Rock, Modern Country and even some Bro Country. Our gigs are set for the vocals and to set a pace of listening songs, slow dance (bumping uglies), line dancing and fast dancing. So I assign an appropriate bass tone to songs of P bass, Jazz, humbucker and MM all of which I get from my SJ5XXX. Each song has the appropriate initial (P, J, H, MM) next to it. Fortunately, one set can be covered by my SPJ5 which I also love playing.

Also, during the build period of my SJ5XXX, I asked Sheldon if they were designing a 3X rotary, he said they weren't, they were fully work loaded in other areas and didn't have the manpower to spare. He recommended a U.S. source for rotaries, but also said due to space limitations, a 5 way would be fine, but a 6 way might be too big.

RE the FD3s, the newer ones appear to be more around 8.6K vs the 2-3K of the older ones pictured.

And lastly, my desired rotary settings in a perfect world would be to have the neck and middle PUPs solo'd, and a neck/bridge and middle/bridge option. As currently set up, I have not found a use for the bridge solo'd, but I'm working on it by using alternate PUP combinations (Ptone, FDV).

Do you guys really flip your rotary that much? For the most part, I set it and forget it on my Dingwalls. I would probably be overwhelmed if it had eight positions...
At rehearsal or on the gig, not that much. When I'm practicing alone, yes, a lot. Just like how I never switch basses on stage, but love playing all my basses at home.

I found the 3x w/switches and the rotary very useful - lots of tonal variation.

I do use the rotary switch on my Super J (P/J) a lot too. Especially to go in between straight P and P/J (either series or parallel). On my Afterburners, I tend to use the both pickups in series most often, but sometime I also go to the neck pickup soloed as well.
