So I guess there's nothing for it but to swap them in and out and see how they sound to my ears, through my rigs and in band settings, sounds fun!

Yep, that's it!

I have a D-Bird switch incoming for my SJ3X myself, I fell in love with the front setting (all three pickups on) at the NAMM show: middle and bridge in parallel, wired in series w neck.

The punch and bark was astounding, curious to how it translates to the shorter scale in different woods in the SJ, especially with the P tone in the neck; it'll essentially be a PMM bass in that setting

Recorded a few tunes live from the floor a couple months back with a great new band that I'll be touring with this year, here's the first one:
The SJ had FDV pickups in it, neck and bridge in parallel with both pickups in series

If anyone has a 5er non-installed FD3, can you look at the bottom and give me the ohm value? PM is fine. Thanks.

And since I'm here, had band practice last night, and I'll say it again, I love that SPJ5, gives up nothing to my SJXXX, so if you are waiting for a used SJXXX to pop up (good luck with that), or hesitate to order a build and wait, jump on a used SPJ5 or SJ5 (maybe pop a Ptone in the SJ5), I promise you will be happy.
I don't know if you have your answer yet, but I do have an uninstalled FD3. Won't be home until this evening, but I will find it as soon as I get home and send it on.

Can anybody comment on the feel of a long scale vs medium scale DW 5 string?

I'm considering grabbing a Super series bass but I'm having a hard time imagining a huge difference vs it and a traditional 35" scale bass. It's pretty night and day between the long scale and 35" scale.

I do wish there was a long scale P and J with 18mm spacing. That would make this much easier :)

One of the biggest things is that the Super Series feels two positions shorter (in neck length). The big one for me is the 18mm versus 19mm string spacing. I prefer 18mm and 19mm does feel wide to me. I am not sure what the nut width is, but it also feels fairly wide, which also contributes to the wide feel of the Super Series basses.

Nothing beats the super long scale 37" B-string, but the 35" on the Super Series is respectable. The tone matches the other strings well, but I have heard other 35" scale basses that had better sounding B-strings. By better, I mean clearer and more defined.

Just checked the FD3's I'm about to ship, 8.6 and 8.55 respectively.

That's basically my concerns. I prefer tighter spacing so 19mm isn't ideal but I can work with it.

If the B and other strings really aren't "better" than another 35" scale bass (I have a few great 35" basses) I'm wondering if I'll dig it or not.

I think I want to try one and find out for myself regardless but I'm looking for as much info as I can get.

Many thanks for all of the replies so far!

When I first got my Super J (which is now a P/J), I was a little underwhelmed at first when comparing to the Afterburners, but now it is my #1. It absolutely balances perfectly and it plays almost identical standing up as it does sitting down. Surprisingly, I also really like the punchy sound of the 32" G-string (as well as the others) and it sounds great and even across its whole range.

If you do any slapping, I prefer the shorter scale. It sounds great on everything and has a more traditional sound. Keep in mind mine is one of the first generation models with the SuperFatty pickups.

For the string spacing; you get used to it. Most of the time it is fine, but occasionally I wish it was 18mm.
