Might also be that it had a slightly slower attack to the note envelope and a quick decay with a long sustain, whereas the alder/maple or alder/pau ferro seemed to have a relatively fast attack with a slower decay and shorter sustain.

It's hard for me to imagine not loving the sound of my PJ, but I'll be damned if I'm not grateful that you felt that way. Still my favorite even after I got my much flashier and originally more expensive Super J.

I still really want an AB-4, but I can't afford one and I could never flip my SP5 or ABZ6 for one. I just think the AB-4 would be an awesome slapping, pick-playing, grinding rock machine. I take a different approach to playing 4, 5, and 6 strings and write very different parts for each. Future bass plans, I suppose.

I would like one as well. Apparently the 5's sell a higher volume than the 4's but I do know some of us, me included, like our 4's.

My j is alder body, wenge neck but ziricote fb. Does that count???? I'd say the alder doesn't compensate much for the scooped nature of the wenge neck. The funny thing with this bass though is I end up playing it mostly acoustic late at night when if I cranked up my wife would cut something........ preferably just a cable. Lol.

DT if your looking at creative options have you considered looking at a J and putting a p time in the neck?

I'm looking forward to checking out that vid once I'm out of this "exciting" course today.

Thanks for that feedback, that's what I figured.

I prefer the P body style. Would probably be fine with just a P, though I do like having the Wait, are you trying to trick me out of a certain Z here for an SJ trade!?:D I told you you'll be first to know!!

So I'm having a custom built and considering using the "Sweetspot" pickup layout like on the NG2 (I have an NG2 and like it a lot). On my various basses over the use I don't use the neck pickup very much and almost never all the way. What do y'all think? We're talking soapbar EMGs here. Pros and Cons?

Yeah, not in love with this system myself. Basically, you loosen the tension of the string and then loosen the screw on the monobridge, and then just slide the bridge forward or back where it needs to be and re-tighten it. Requires guesswork, trial and errror, and maybe a little bit of profanity. I feel this is a very crappy system for a high end bass. But it is what it is.

This is a MUCH better design for a monobridge:

I haven't converted my Combustion because it would cost me $230 and what is on it works. Once you get it set, you should be good unless you change string brands or sizes. Mine came with Dingwall strings and I never had to reset the intonation until I got Kallium balanced strings and that needed a pretty big change.

I'm thinking you should consult Dingwall. I think your looking at a few specs they may not offer. Unless your thinking potentially a Z2 ?

Probably the best bass I will ever own....just when I leave it for awhile and get all crazed over something else, I go play this ABZ4, and then I think...WOW, it is in a league of its own!
All passive, ash body, wenge/wenge, p-pup....any future customs, again will have this wood combo...zero doubt. :)

I believe mayones has been doing FF for quite a while now.
I would love to try A Mayones but the funny thing is, I would love to try one of their parallel fret ones as I feel they would be a let down compared to a ding.
Perhaps a caledonius Single cut.
Not to mention if it's not the same fan (like the ibanez(which is extremely meh) it might be quite unpleasant IMO.
