Was the alternating dark/light pattern on the fretboard a shop option, or something you did after the fact?

Those are wood inlays, looks like they match the body top

I wonder what the new Payson flats sound/ feel like.

They are extremely well balanced and have excellent feel. For my preferences, the La Bellas have more articulation, presence, dynamics and just better overall tone.

Actually, if I were to go back to TIs, I would match them with the Payson flatwound B - this combo would work well

Messin around on the Z. I did this electronic arrangement of Somebody's Baby some time ago but never could figure out what to do for a bass line. So just hit record and did whateverthef*ck. Z is set to Neck/Bridge both in series treble cut a smidge and a little mid and bass boost.

Talent knob set to suck!

My SP5 has a set of TIs that I've bounced around different basses for the better part of a decade. I bought a virtually-unused TI B in the classifieds and the fresher/ brighter newer string works really well to give the B articulation but it doesn't sound like I'm playing different kinds of strings on the same bass.

That said, I could see the relatively fat TI B just being too tubby on the longer scale basses.

I loved the TI flats on the SPJ5, except for the B. So it's not any better on the 37"? I swear I couldn't get it set to give me a solid fundamental.

It is too big at the bridge since it's not tapered....no fundamental whatsoever

As I've said before, never cared for the TI B on any bass, especially my AB1. E-G, love them. I've got a nickel Lowrider B on ice for when I go back to them.

Yes. Those are matching wood block inlays.

This photo shows it better. As I mentioned. I wish I had Tony's photog skills as I was really trying to find a better shot of how the black beauties look on this beast.

I haven't found a flatwound B string that works on my Combustion, and I've been through them all. I have a Payson groundwound B with La Bella flats on there now. It is imperfect but workable.

What about all strung with Payson groundwound?

What about all strung with Payson groundwound?

I find these closer to rounds than flats as a set; the B was significantly darker in tone than the rest of the set, which is why it roughly matches the La Bellas. Maybe my B was dead out of the package or something.

I miss this bass a little. Letting it go was the right move at the time since I wasn't playing any 4 string - but I'm now in an Avantasia tribute tuned DGCF for which it would have been great.

Side note: I don't really like myself in this video. Did it in a hurry since I had to give the bass whammy back so I read the whole thing instead of actually learning it.
