Yeah, I bought it just over a year ago, then spent a year fussing with it. Some more to do, but it's a 94 (supposedly on of the first batch of production basses), but the electronics have been upgraded to something closer to the modern package. I used it for about 30 minutes the other night before switching over to the Rastaburst. That was a screamingly loud room and our guitarist and I were having a hard time hearing bass definition, which isn't unusual in that room.

For now I'm using a Kern IP-777 preamp for my rig while my Monique is packed and traveling back to visit Jule for some fun in his shop.

Very cool! I've never played one of the older Dingwalls, but yours sure sounds great with it's modern tuneup.

Some rooms can really be tricky. I feel like now that I really have a handle on the sounds of my two basses I am better equipped to deal with it, but I've had some rough times with that.

It's definitely a different feeling bass. The neck is thicker and without the same carve that I'm used to with modern Z or AB asymmetric shape. Structurally it's also a different instrument...12pc. neck, pau ferro board, mahogany body. It's lively, but in a stage situation it's also mechanically compressed.

Monique just enjoys visiting Jule every once in a while. The exterior box we ship her back and forth in has so many layers of tape now that it's basically a tape ball. So, I ship it off, and am pleasantly surprised when it comes home. Although it's hard to get it out of my hands and these days missing it for a few weeks even is a handful of gigs.

Oh wow, that's very interesting. Having been late to the Dingwall game, I'm not all that familiar with the changes throughout the years. If your band ever happens to come out near Chicago I'd love to see you play. Sadly, I've never been an audience member to hear a Dingwall being played.

If you look at the decades of Dingwall production as a timeline of continued development and refinement, then it makes sense...it has the main ideas in place but not the exacting finesse and design tweaks that came across the 25ish years until now.

I can definitely see that. Though I've owned many fine instruments, nothing has compared to the three Dingwalls I've been privileged to own. I think that's what is missing from so many others is that continual commitment to refine and perfect. It's why I was simply stunned when I picked up my first Dingwall.

If you shot it with an iPhone, that explains your frame rate issue. Apple decided that users really wanted a variable frame rate.

Being a post production guy, I feel my stomach sink when someone says, "We shot some iPhone video..."

Whenever I work with any cell phone video in ProTools, I open it first in QuickTime and convert it to a fixed frame rate mov before I do anything else. The resulting file is huge but it's easier to deal with sync issues and it plays smoothly in ProTools.
