I would double check with the shop. My V4 combustion with the square pick ups did not have room for three pick ups with out routing the body to fit them. This may have changed since then, so it is worth looking in to.

I actually sold that last year, like late summer, early fall I believe.
I much prefer the long-scale format ergonomically, as well as tonally. I have also just sold my ABZ, which I also loved.
One of the prettiest ABZ's without an upgraded top I've ever seen, because I really prefer the alder to the swamp ash in tone. Just a personal preference thing. I didn't even know Sheldon had started using alder, until I saw a few ABI's last year that were spec'd with alder. When I received my ABI from Down Under, I knew I was finally zeroing on my Dingwall tonal sweet spot. When Jon made his ABI available, and I found out that it too was alder as well as a 3x, I pounced.I guess I could see myself maybe picking up a Z some day far down the road, as it is the pinnacle of the long-scale family (well OK, Prima is the ultimate pinnacle but I will never have own of those unless I win the lottery or Sheldon gives me one, both equally unlikely
). But for the next good while, I am going to be good on DAS!

Cool. I remember you offering it up, but did not see where it sold. I'm glad that you are finding wood that 'works' for you tonally. I'm glad that you found a deal on a suitable 3X! I can't make any hard/fast categorical judgments by wood species. For me, it depends on the individual pieces. My SP4 is ash/maple/maple, my SJ5 is ash/maple/morado, and my SJ/P4 is alder/maple morado. All three 'work well' for me and tickle my ears nicely!
I owned and played a beautiful Stormy Monday blue SJ/P5 for a couple of years (I gave it every chance!) that was ash/maple/maple. Tried every tweak, but it just would not float my boat tonally and ended up selling it to fund my Reeves...

My custom SJ is alder with wenge/zirocote. W/ 3 band glock. It's very enjoyable.

Thanks sir! This will be my second alder bodied Dingwall. I think Sheldon started making them a year or two ago. I love the warmer mid range you get over the ash. I think I read somewhere that Sheldon liked the wenge neck/alder body combo a lot. I know I do!
I think the 3 band glock really opens up the mids compared to the 2 band. It gives so much control and transparency.
If you don't find this to be the case Bob, I'll happily take the new AB1 off your hands free of charge..... Well maybe you could buy me a beer and we can call it even!
In all seriousness though. If I do end up keeping this NTM Sj I may look into changing the 2 band to a 3 band.
Nobody does blue like Sheldon Dingwall. First, there is just the amazing number of different blues he has done. And second, they are all pretty much awesome. I've always been a sucker for Whale Pool Blue.
Agreed man the blue jean finish on @Tonycarlson's pj is something else. The depth of the ash on the back of that guitar is spectacular.
Anyone else go from 5-6 to 4? I recently added an sj4 and I'm trying to train myself not to rely on those occasional low "statement" notes. It's a fun challenge and one that's going to make a better player out of me!

Has anyone modded their Combustion to have a passive tone control? I love the passive sound but don't love not being able to tweak it on my bass.
I love having a hybrid treble control as well (treble boost above the centre detent, passive tone roll off below).
By doing that, I'd lose the 4 position switching in lieu of a blend knob, correct?
No, you can still use the 4 position rotary. I did that on both of my formerly-passive AB1's.
I just spent some time on my SPJ5, to refresh memories, I added an FDV to the bridge and installed a tort reverse P pickguard. Both made a huge difference. To me, with the original P configuration, the BE strings overpowered the DG, so I had to pluck them more towards the neck and hit them harder as well (yes tried PUP height adjustments, helped but didn't solve). Problem now solved, plus the DG tone now has more meat to it. But wait, there's more! My SPJ5 now sounds more like a true P in that it has more growl to the P solo'd. Before, it had more bass, and a polite growl, or in other words, sounded very similar to my SJ5XXX neck PUP solo'd, so it sounded pretty much like the same bass but with 2 PUPs. Not anymore, it has its own thing going, this is gonna be fun. Plus, the FDV in the bridge adds more growl and mids to all settings, and even appears to have a useable solo tone! I'm so very happy with bass now 
Also, I thought the bass looked too dark with the black pickguard, I prefer the color contrast with the excellent Dingwall tort coloring, IMO, the bass is now stunning drool
And 3rd, for probably the 1st and last time I disagree with Sheldon, I prefer the looks of the reverse P, I think the lines flow better.
I'll get some photo's up later.

For the infrequency I play a 4 it actually throws me off quite a bit. I keep telling myself I need to get one but I think maybe having another adjustment to make won't do me any specific good so I'm leaning towards..... why bother.
But then, well, you know what often happens when there is a Dingwall I must have......
I'm not laughing at you, it just struck me funny that you blame Dave Hope. I have followed your "tonal pursuit" stories and empathize with your obsession. I've spent hours and hours and hours listening to Kansas and being blown away by Dave's tone and playing.
