Sheldon Dingwall here, some of you have noticed that I’ve disappeared from Facebook and are concerned that either something has happened to myself personally or that I’ve blocked you. Neither of these are the case.


Myself, Carey Nordstrand and about a dozen others in the bass industry have had our accounts disabled. The problem stemmed from a customer who had signed us all on as admins for a bass group. This person posted a video (possibly a playthrough video but I’m not sure) that triggered a complaint. Facebook’s response was to hold all the admins responsible and disable their personal accounts without notice even though the video was taken down.


I posted once in this particular group but found it to be too noisy and haven’t been back on it since. I just hadn’t had time to remove myself from it. People would sign me up for groups all the time. I would eventually remove myself from groups I had no intention of being active in. The difference this time was that I’d been signed on as an admin (without my consent). I couldn’t have predicted the ramifications. One warning would have been enough for me to remove myself.


There has been no response from Facebook regarding my appeal. Maybe it will resolve itself, maybe the group of us will have to band together and seek legal help. If anyone has been through this and has some advice, please send me an email [email protected]

I saw your disappearance, and then a few posts about what happened. What a crap situation and it sounds like facebook is handling it about as poorly as possible. Hopefully you can get resolution sooner than later.

I noticed some others, Pedulla in particular, who basically said "Nope, we're done with facebook even if out account comes back. Eff this place". Sucks that there isn't really an alternative to have the reach FB does, and also that you have no real avenue for help. Maybe push more people to the Dingwall forums? Is the main Dingwall Guitars page impacted?

That sucks, Sheldon. Facebook does some weird stuff though. Did they disable it for a specific time limit, or indefinitely. In the past they'd do it for a specific time (a week or two) then longer or permanently if things happened again. If you haven't made multiple requests for resolution, I'd do that. I've actually had some good facebook service and some terrible. If you're paying them, they sometimes give you better service. ;)

BTW, I play my Dingwalls at ALL gigs, including dive bars! But I assure you, if some out-of-control drunk $#*^*$# gets anywhere near my Dingwalls, there will be an appropriate response.;)

I'm a yes and no on this.

I've carried the Rastaburst to every show since I got it in 2008. But now things have sort of changed. In the end, that's a good thing. I have a hard case for it because of van travel and the amount of loading, so it's not as easy to just put it on my back and take it with me no matter where. We're playing more stages more often. They're in places where we don't necessarily know the stage or venue staff, nor are the locations secure. Some of the gigs are outdoors and not always fully sheltered (not worried about playing in the rain, but getting our gear out of the weather in a hurry). Gear by nature sometimes has to stay in the van, which is always a recipe for theft if you're not lucky.

This, combined with the fact that I just got a replacement quote if I had to rebuild this bass today, for insurance (The replacement value is on par or maybe a bit more than my car), gave me some new perspective. I'm not looking for a Squier cheap bass, when I find one I'm sure it'll be a 1500-2500 Dingwall that I can be a little less concerned about.

I know, I know. I'm just being silly..... but seriously. It's just so sad if a person can't be a fan boy and decide to share that with their friends. Perhaps a revolt against the allmighty media is in order......
