I've done blue, and I'm not really into the blackburst...

The hard part is probably the preamp. I wish Sheldon hadn't given up on the hybrid treble control. I really like the OBP-1 w/hybrid setup.

The Rastaburst is ash body, but I don't mind an alder either.

I have the hybrid treble control on both my ABII and SJ5 and use it all the time. It's a great thing to have.

Sheldon used to do a lot of the tweaky in house electronics himself. Back in 2005 when I ordered the Rastaburst, he was working on a new gadget for his basses. I liked the idea of the OBP-1 2-band preamp, because I like the EQ points and didn't want a mid. But I had reservations since it was boost-only and I rarely boost treble, but would boost lows. Apparently others had similar thoughts. What Sheldon came up with was a single treble control that was a center detent...that on the front side of the notch was the preamp's treble boost. But on the backside, was a traditional passive tone roll-off. With the added bonus that you can still use the roll off in passive mode too.

He eventually did away with it when he moved to the Glock preamp which could both roll off and boost.

I do believe this hybrid control is how the Glock preamp works. Passive roll off, active boost. I'll check the paperwork that came with my ABZ6.

I know that was sarcasm, as well it should be! I am only a badass when absolutely necessary and even then, I don't want to be one. But some douche gets too close to my Dingwalls all drunk and bull-in-a-china-shop, I may not be able to contain myself. Or as Penny on Big Bang Theory says as she picks up a baseball bat, "I'd have to go all Nebraska on their asses!!"

Indeed, that is how it works.
I also modified my Glockenklang pre - I raised the lows up (40Hz is just way, way too low. I raised it to probably 80Hz or so) and lowered the highs (again, 18kHz is just way, way too high. I brought it waaay down, somewhere around 6kHz.

It's quite simple. I'm at work, so I may not remember the values properly...
To lower the EQ center of the treble pot:
There's a 4n7 (aka 472, or 4700pF) cap on the sweeper of the treble pot. You have two options:
1) Replace it - 6n8 (6800pF / 0.0068uF) cap or 10n (10000pF / 0.01uF) -- I'm pretty sure I went with 10n, which IIRC brought it down to a bit over 6kHz. I'd have to look at it again to confirm.
2) Augument it - add a 2nd cap of either 2n2 (2200pF / 0.0022uF) or 4n7 (4700pF / 0.0047uF) in parallel.

To raise the EQ center of the bass pot:
There are *two* 47n (47000pF / 0.047uF) caps between the wiper and both outer pins. You want to lower the capacitance, so replace *both* with something like a 33n (33000pF / 0.033uF)

Actually, 33n might only get you to like 50-60Hz on the low. Might need to go even lower to raise it higher. I think I went with 33n. Took some experimenting to find the values I like - I suggest doing the same.

I can't even hear up around 18khz. I like 40hz for the low though, the OBP-2 has the treble at 6.5 and the OBP-1 has it at 4khz. I like 4 better than 6... Because I'm difficult. :D

So is this considered "natural"?



To me natural is just a clear coat on wood, though it looks like you prefer colors or bursts.

Reason I ask is this one has an OBP-1 and I am considering selling it.

That's a nice one, I'd consider it but I'm really looking for one that's got a maple neck and either ash or alder body (maple top a bonus). Fairly close to the Rastaburst in construction. I have a voodoo prima, but it's a mahogany body and it sounds fairly different. Thanks though!
