I just learned this one recently myself! Love that bass line. What's tough for me is singing the lyric while playing that funky line. That part I'm still working on.:help:

Fun fact: The orginal lyric was: "I want NOTHING else, to get me through this, semi-charmed kind of life, ..." not SOMETHING else as ultimately recorded. The record company made them change it, because it sounded too much like an endorsement of said crystal meth.

I may know a guy with a 6 string with I believe the same spec your talkin bout!!! Last we talked. I sold him my Ab2 (which I miss dearly) and he offered to sell me his 6 shortly after. Interested? I can talk to him.

I just found a pretty good offer for an early SJ4 with super fatties. I've got a couple of questions for those who have played earlier and newer models.

1. How do the SF compare to the FD3s in the SJ?

2. I believe this one isn't routed for a P-pickup on the neck position. How difficult would it be to add that? Is it too risky?

I have an early SJ 5 that came with super fatties, the body was routed for the P pup and I replaced the neck SF with a P. I used the new pickguard to locate the pup, tapped a couple holes and soldered the connections. While I was in there, I wired the bridge SF to series.

The early Super Jp 4 I had, the batteries were under the pickguard, but I can't recall what the route for the neck pup (it was a P) looked like. Since everything will be covered by the new pickguard, I wouldn't hesitate to take a router and create the space for a P pup. The new pickguard will be your template for locating the pup. Oversize the route a bit, fine tune the pup location and mounting holes, drill and tap the new holes.

While you are contemplating all that work and gathering parts, you could wire the neck SF in series, which bumps it a good ways towards the P sound. Quick, easy and reversible.

I really like how my P tone and SF work together. I can't compare with the newer pickup versions.

The early Super J 4's have a super slim neck. Mine weighed just over eight pounds and was simply excellent in every aspect.

It think that it would be well worth adding a P or Ptone @ the neck, but I am biased from playing this one for almost eight years:

Thanks Nate. I really appreciate that kind offer, but it's going to take me a while to absorb two recently purchased AB1s, economically speaking. I am probably going to be out of the market for at least the next 6 months I would think. BUT, that sounds like a cool one, so if you hear anything later on down the line on availability, please let me know!!

Does anyone happen to know what the status on dingwall's shipments are? Mines 3 months overdue now. I understand they're getting slammed, but it's hard to get any idea of a timeline from correspondence with my vendor and dingwall themselves.

I had a first year Super J 4. Wish I still had it...but I needed the $$ to help fund my awesome Z3...

Thanks for the detailed response! I got pictures of the one i'm being offered and it is indeed routed for a P pickup at the neck position :hyper:

Good news and bad news with Dingwall ownership, good is I no longer have GAS, the bad is no longer getting the thrill of the chase high I had on my 18 year gear merry-go-round.

Fortunately, with all the available PUPs, tinkering keeps things interesting. Seriously, I'm so happy with my SJ5XXX and SPJ5, although I enjoy seeing the new finishes, nothing has tempted me to change up my stable. The crew at Dingwall has my admiration and gratitude.

Are you speaking Import NG2/Combustion or a custom Canadian? I am not sure Dingwall knows when the shipments are going to arrive for the Imports; delays happen. And then they go over each one individually for quality control and setup. With current high demand, my orders appear to be off by 2-3 months from eta given in January, and even longer ETA than ETA given in September - October, 2016. I have basses ordered each month and the eta's are never really spot on. Basically, they ship when they ship, and every single one of them has been gone over with attention to detail and for the ones I have received, absolutely perfect setup. Which of course is one reason for the high demand. I tell everyone who orders one to not have expectations of ETA and to not order unless they realize these basses ship when they ship, and realize that the quality control attention to detail is more important than shipping dates.
All that said, I am as anxious to receive my basses as anyone else, and sit here impatiently waiting all the time.
