What do all you NG2 owners think of the stock pups, and the stock nickel strings ???????

Both are quite good!! That said, I'm really liking these Payson strings, and for pickups I've got TB's own @Rodent cooking up a set of Heavy Hitters for me.

Yes and no... The clean sound is as good as I have ever heard; however, I can't really seem to get a very pleasing sound out of the Microtubes side with the Thunderchild. I can almost get there with some pretty drastic EQ'ing, but not quite. At that point, if I switch the Microtubes off the clean sound is no longer pleasing.

Why not have an EQ pedal? Punch in the EQ and dirt on the same loop and you're set.

That's my only issue. Everything sound amazing otherwise. I haven't messed with pickup height but everything else. I also just switches from SS to nickel (again).

I really think it's mainly the lack of an attenuator for highs on the cabs. The speaker itself is so full range that it's still putting out a lot of high end content when the crossover the sending everything to it. With dirt tones the high end is just brittle and harsh.

Another step I want to try is FDV's. Alnico vs. neo...

A simple bass eq pedal may be helpful.

The issue there is fitting it onto my board. I'm kinda married to my board size right now. It's as big as I want to go but too small for what I really want to bring along. Everything on it is essential at this point. I've still thought about cramming one on though...and a loop pedal so I could have the dirt and EQ together with one switch.

The Beta DLX I've been using is still working pretty well for me. I put it through the paces at the last gig and was really happy with what is was doing for my NG-2.

In other news, @Selta Ray is in a cool band and whether or not they have me mix their EP, he's a great player, a super nice guy, and the tracks are gonna sound great when they're all done!

Yup, it's being routed for the FDV, then the refinish, and I'll be wiring it all up.

I'm going to keep the tone fusion pot, I think the solo'd bridge pickup with scooped mids could be a cool sound. We'll see (heat) in a few weeks.

Long time ago I did some basic recordings on Super J vs. Super PJ. Not the best comparison, but I hope it helps someone.



Super J has an Aguilar OBP-1 and 2 Super Fatty J pickups
Super PJ has a Glockenklang and 1 P pickup, 1 J pickup

Forgive the simplicity (which I could play in my sleep until I try to record it for bass friends!). I've come to realize this will only help so much since I played mostly above the P pickup and playing above the J (or in between) will yield a different sound (not to mention depending on how I play, etc.). Hopefully it gives you a little sample anyway.

SuperJ1-4 Plays through each switch setting, playing open notes in passive, then active
SuperJ2andtone plays a little riff on setting 2, then messes with the tone

SuperPJ1-4then2 plays through each switch setting, playing open notes in passive, then active then plays a little riff on setting 2
SuperPJtone messes with the tone a bit on setting 2

Note I think my numbers are backwards as to me when I am looking down 1 is all the way to the left, where I think to Dingwall, that is 4.

EDIT: I found my original post on the Dingwall site where I said "Just now realized when I piped this through my Markbass, I had VLE up about 2/3 and VPF up about 1/3. When I get time I may try to record again."

So highs aren't going to be very present in this one.

I've been looking for a 2nd hand Dingwall Afterburner or ABZ 5/3 but I've not been successful so far but I have found this beautiful 2 pickup version (I adore this finish!).

I'm thinking of buying it and a Dingwall P tone pickup, getting a luthier to route a 3rd pickup in the middle, move the neck pickup to the middle and get the p tone installed I'm the neck position.

Is this practical or idiotic? I'm not sure if the 2pickup version has the pickups in the same position and if it would match (I've attached a picture of the bass and a very crude photoshop of it with an extra pickup) . Would rewiring be simple enough using the same rotary pickup selecter? I'd also consider getting 3xseries parallel toggles installed but that might be a bit much.

Am I over complicating things or is this feasible?
Maybe I should just be more patient waiting for the right stock bass to turn up on the 2nd hand market?

I converted my Z2 into a Z3, but I don't think the space between an AB's neck and bridge pickup is wide enough to accommodate the third pickup.

You'd have to re-rout the entire pickup cavity.

That said, buy the bass, replace the neck PU with a P-Tone, and play it that way for a while.

If you still feel the need for that 3rd pickup, you'll already have it on hand.
