Dingwall Owners Club

Hi, I was wondering if any of you could give me some advice.

I've been looking for a 2nd hand Dingwall Afterburner or ABZ 5/3 but I've not been successful so far but I have found this beautiful 2 pickup version (I adore this finish!).

I'm thinking of buying it and a Dingwall P tone pickup, getting a luthier to route a 3rd pickup in the middle, move the neck pickup to the middle and get the p tone installed I'm the neck position.

Is this practical or idiotic? I'm not sure if the 2pickup version has the pickups in the same position and if it would match (I've attached a picture of the bass and a very crude photoshop of it with an extra pickup) . Would rewiring be simple enough using the same rotary pickup selecter? I'd also consider getting 3xseries parallel toggles installed but that might be a bit much.

Am I over complicating things or is this feasible?
Maybe I should just be more patient waiting for the right stock bass to turn up on the 2nd hand market?

You will end up with large uneven gaps between the pickups. I'd recommend leaving it as is.

Thanks for all your responses!

If I was speccing up a bass from scratch it would more or less look exactly like that! Beautiful!

Unfortunately I'm in the UK or I would be very tempted!

Well I think I'd be a fool to ignore the advice of yourself!

I had a feeling this might be the case (hence me posting in the first place) - it looked like the gap may be too large. I would only have consider doing this if it would look stock afterwards, anything else would be an act of butchery on a fi e instrument!

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I'm looking into maybe ordering an ABZ but would have to save the pennies first!

You're in the UK? In that case, I'd recommend picking up the used Afterburner. You won't lose money on it. Mark at Bass Direct is great at taking in instruments on trade when it's time to upgrade to something custom.

Is there any Dingwall NG2 players in here from the Boston area?
I've been wanting to try one and can not find any in my area.
I'm a 4 string player, but if you got a 5er that's ok. Hit me up with
a PM if so and would like to meet. Thanks!!!

I'm picking up a used 5 string Dingwall Combustion V1 this Saturday! I had an NG2 last year that I unfortunately had to sell at the time, so I'm very excited about owning a Dingwall again (even if I would love an NG2 again but I can't stretch that far financially). I'll post pics when I get it! :hyper:
I just saw a 2017 NG2 5, new I think, for $1,300, at least if I understood the add correctly. You could talk to Michael at Shome Music to verify.

I'll try to get you a phone number, but in the mean time if you Google Sho Me Sound and music, you should see it.
Also you can email Michael at [email protected].
I'll try to get you more info
Indecently, I just received my new NG2 5 string yesterday and amazed at the sound, playability, and versatility of this bass. Even more killer thru my Bergantino B amp, and pair of Reference 112' speakers. best bass I've ever owned hands down !!!!!!!
