Some advice please. I have an older (1998) Vodoo Prima 5 that I've upgraded with NG3 pickups and a Glockenklang preamp. It currently has Dingwall Custom strings. I bought a couple of sets of Payson strings from a local guy as extras cause they were cheap. What's the groups opinion of the Paysons vs the Dingwalls?

I won't be much help here except to say that I like Payson's, I like the Dingwalls and I like the Kalliums. I tend to play nickel alloys, and all three suppliers have great nickel alloy strings.

I'm planning on trying to pay more attention to this issue now that I have totally settled in on two AB1's to see if there is any set that I like the most. I have Payson nickel alloys with reduced core on my two pickup AB1, and really like them. I found that I did not favor them as much on my ABI-3x, and put on a set of the Kallium nickel alloys and really like them for that bass much better.

Bottom line, I think they are all really good strings. YMMV of course.

Thnx Michael for getting it to me as quickly as possible.
I only had my Fender Rumble to try it thru when I received it, but it sounded very good, then yesterday, I got my Bergantino rig from our rehearsal room and was blown away by the sound of this combination.
with the NG2, and Bergantino rig I can get any sound I could imagine, and now excited about the Berg Bluetooth wireless Foot Switch which adds the possibility of a 3rd preset, and changing settings on the fly !!!!

Well I'm finally back home and here she is! A Dingwall Combustion V1 bought for €900! It's in great condition, the fretboard just needed a little cleaning when I got back. I e-mailed Dingwall last week with the serial number to get some background on it and this is bass number "94" among the very first run of Combustion basses. Pretty awesome to know that little bit of history about it! :) it's getting put through it's paces now through a Mesa D800 and Darkglass M900 as well as the Darkglass B7K and Alpha Omega. Pretty damn happy right now! :D

I have used the Dingwall nickels, Payson nickels, both medium light and reduced core, Circle K (Kalium) balanced nickels. I don't use stainless strings so I can't comment on stainless offerings.

All were fine strings, and I was happy with all of them. If I had to pick a favorite: the Payson Reduced core. Followed by the medium lights. But I prefer slinkier feeling strings. The Dingwalls were just a bit stiffer.

Other sets that worked on the AB's, Infeld Super Alloy super longs, and mixed sets of TI jazz flats. (Bought these through Bassstringsonline.com). The Infeld superalloys were least expensive, but felt good and lasted a long time.

As for availability, now that BSO.com stocks Dingwall strings, the international shipping hassles and costs are gone. Since I no longer have longscale Dingwalls, BSO.com has become my go to site. Jason knows what you need to fit the longscale Dingwalls, and he'll assemble sets out of individual strings to get you a great fit.

Payson will get your strings to you quickly. Never a problem with service.

Kalium can be on the slow side, but you will get your strings.

I have to make a confession. I had never played one before I bought a significant order - I took it on faith after speaking with Sheldon for about two hours. When I first took one out to look at it I freaked - how is a person supposed to play such a thing with these WEIRD frets! I closed my eyes, dug in, and in 3 minutes I had a big grin on my face.

Why is there over a $200. difference between stores? One store is offering an NG2 5 String for a little over $1500. Shipped. While others have the same bass for over $1700. Just trying to figure this out and make the right decision.

We've always offered singles unofficially for custom sets etc... now we have singles listed on the site for easier purchasing. Customer support/communication is our goal 110%.

Ooooooo....with the 170 I may be ordering some strings from you soon. I'm hearing that Kalium is having a lot of issues with fulfilling orders and shipping, so I've been on the lookout for an alternative.

There can be many factors

For larger stores means more overhead. But on the other hand if they move more volume they may get better net pricing.
They may also have better more cost effective methods of shipping. Maybe not too.

The other thing is stock. Is one "new old stock" vs fresh off the truck.

Another factor is profit margins. Some company's want to make a few more bucks per sale if they don't move very much stock.


At the end of the day , if you have a preferred place to shop and the prices will be close to comparable, what's a few buck for peace of mind.
