Dingwall Owners Club

Hey, that’s me!

Mo did an amazing job routing and drilling my SP5 to add an FDV bridge, and Fausto did a paint job that looks factory. There is not one single flaw, none, zero.

@kirkdickinson - get in touch with Mo to have your bass redone by Fausto. Fantastic price, beyond professional, and results that will look factory done or better.

I like that color!

I missed something. What is the problem keeping the Combustion’s from getting to the shops?

The new bridges look similar to the hipshot mono bridges but definitely not the same. Who makes them and are they available for purchase?
I believe several shops got a batch in August. We received about 12 and still have 4. Every bass shipped since about April has the newer hardware. Someone mentioned the purple and the swirls. My estimate for our order of every combination of swirls/purple now is February 2018; it was October and before that is was July/August, and I ordered before the 2017 NAMM rush of orders. I know Dingwall is working hard to bring the delays down and has added more staff.

I'd talk to someone at the shop and see what they can do on the bridge pieces for you.

I think the delays on the production of the latest batch of Chinese made Dingwalls is less to do with any kind of manpower or shop related bottleneck and more to do with QC coming from overseas. If it's not good enough, it's just not good enough. So yeah, we're waiting for them to meet the standard.

I think you are correct. If a shipment is rejected there goes at least a month at minimum. But due to the fact that factory does other production, a batch rejection could lead to several months. But it also is true that wait times for processing went up as well due to the sheer volume. Over the past year Sheldon has addressed that with more staff. I could tell a noticeable difference from early this year to last month.. And even the Canadian basses ETA has gone up due to demand.

This does happen. My experience with a bass ordered in 2005 was that I had a quote of 6-8 months. The Super-J was released at NAMM in early 2006...and was wildly successful and wait times went to a year, then 3 years before they got a handle on the situation. Part of how they did that was shop expansion the other part was to eliminate some of the options they'd been applying to Z series basses (less customization), and I believe they streamlined the AB production as well.

I think you may notice more jigs, forms and other 'production related' coming out of the shop. This is to ease some of the production time...and we do know that they've hired some people. A quick shout out to Carrie in the Dingwall shop who's helped me a few times in the past few months and is taking some of the administrative tasks off of Sheldon's shoulders.

But yeah, quality control. We want it, the shop wants it. And when a production run or sample out of a factory that's thousands of miles away doesn't meet standard, it causes a chain affect hold up. One of the thing that makes Combustion and NG basses worth doing is having a contractor with higher quality production standards. That means better CNC (good quality technology on the floor, higher tolerances for the smaller details; but also keeping bits sharp, well trained workers who know what they're doing and are paying attention to the work in front of them), and hand work... Those frets are still going in by hand and someone has to pay attention to the assembly. Paint shop work is also fussy.

In the world of this kind of production a factory or vendor might have multiple tiers of products and quality but you always need to keep an eye on tolerances and output.

If you're working with a dealer who isn't being upfront, you should have that discussion with them. No one wants to be the bearer of bad news, but having that information is important. When I talked to the shop and also the dealer for my NG-2 order I got two sort of different answers. The shop had an estimate that was the end of October. The dealer (Bass Central) said (and I paraphrase) "yes, that's the current wisdom, but you'll probably be less disappointed if you consider the soft estimate to be the last day of November at the earliest. If it comes in by then, be psyched and feel lucky...if not, it shouldn't be too far out after that."

How how about less words and more pictures!
Here's how I generally feel when I'm on stage playing my Dingwall:

And back about a month or so ago we shared stage with one of my all time all time favorite reggae artists...and he really loved my bass & requested that we take a picture with him holding it. Here's King Yellowman giving his blessings to the Rastaburst:

Every bass shipped since about April has the newer hardware.

Does the newer hardware have a proper intonation setup screw? I hate the guess and slide method on the mono-bridges on my current combustion. I like a setting that I can dial in. Can you confirm if they are Hipshot Solos or some other brand? I have been thinking about ordering either a Payson bridge or a set of Hipshot solos.

I have already upgraded all my tuners to USA Hipshot tuners. I saw a photo of an NG-2 with Hipshot tuners. Is that also part of the new hardware?

Hey @Sheldon D. any input on this?

Our new saddles are a modified version of the Hipshot solos with intonation screws. The solos are too long for our basses. They are not a direct retrofit for the older monorails. They have a different hole spacing and are shorter so the footprint in the paint of the old saddle with be visible. All of our stock is currently needed for production but if you're willing to wait for the next batch. Carrie or Jeff can hook you up. [email protected].

Thanks Sheldon. So the new monorails are direct replacements? Holes would match up? What is the time frame for next batch? What is your opinion of the Payson bridge? I could get one of them right now. Thinking about a repaint and if I changed out the bridge, it would be best to do it before the paint. What about the Babicz Full Contact mono bridges? I know they are pricey but look very well made. Will they fit?

Thanks, Kirk
