I spent a few minutes after the DBird with several TBirds from Gibson and Lull. Again, the DBird, IMO, was a noticably "better" bass than those. It's still available, $3590 is the asking price. I'm betting it doesn't last long.

I certainly didn't buy the D Bird in hopes that it would sound any different. I think we all know that DWs have their own distinct sound and it's an exceptional one. Some are a little more flexible than others (3X's for example) but no matter what setting, they all have "that sound".

I think what sets the D Bird apart and why most gravitate: The Look. AB's are great, they all are great but none of them LOOK and vibe like a D Bird. I grew up lusting after that T Bird look but with poor ergo's and tone, I'd never buy one. Not anymore.

I felt the same wY when playing a Z after having played an AB1.

While I like the look and feel of the AB body more, the Z neck was like nothing I've played on a bass before, almost guitar thin, but still comfortable, natural, and fast. If I could get a Z neck on an AB body I would ins heart beat

I was initially hesitant to purchase a Dingwall because the majority of videos I found were very modern/aggressive/clanky sounding which isn’t entirely my thing. I have to say my SJ5 is a great mix of clarity and warmth, which is exactly what I was hoping for. So I wanted to shoot a clip showing it with more conventional tones in case folks are curious. Mine has FD3 pickups and a Glock preamp which I’m very impressed by. I typically use it in series setting, and I shot this clip in that mode in both active and passive to give folks and idea of what it sounds like. Strings are Ernie Ball Cobalts and the bass is tuned 1/2 step down.

thanks man, if i were to compare it to my ng2...
i would say ng2 is a bass i liked as soon as i plugged and played it
whereas the dbird took some time to develop a liking (for me).

it has a thinner body, thinner neck, and it's so light.

initially, i didn't like the 3 pickup all-on option...
until i put some overdrive into the signal chain...
it's ridiculously thick, i still get that "soft knee" sounding even with an overdriven sound imo

I was the exact same way, at first the all on setting was not my favorite. Like you said ridiculously thick. But then, for kicks and giggles, I tried it on a gig and was gobsmacked. It flat dominated with warm, thick bass tone more than heard but FELT.
