Well, bear in mind that the trade was a percentage of the negotiated value of the '72. I didn't do as well as a private sale, but I understand the shop needs to make a markup on the instrument taken in on trade.
It helped some that it's a fairly rare instrument, being a Tele bass, and it was in quite good shape.
I'm happy with the deal. I got rid of an instrument that I thought I would like but didn't and was having trouble selling. And I received an instrument that is already #2 in my stable of 15 or 16 basses. Once I've taken it to a few practices and a gig or two (if that ever happens, sigh) it could conceivably be my #1 favourite bass.
I played along with cover songs for something like two hours last night -- playing really familiar tunes so that I could concentrate on maximizing the fanned fret goodness and learning about which tonal settings work for me (ie: all of them!). I haven't had that much musical enjoyment for quite some time.
No, you don’t want the full diameter section of string coming in contact with the tuner post. B&E strings mainly. The others are OK.

Anybody out there using an NG-2 4-stringer strung F#BEA? Any recommendations for or against?
How easy is it to do a nut swap? Thinking about going completely nuts and getting two new ones made for F#BEA and BEAD. Interested in opinions as well as suggestions for a source for the blanks. (Is bone readily available? Stock looks like some sort of white soft-ish plastic.)

I've got a 5 string NG-2 in F#BEAD. Bone nut blanks on StewMac are long enough, but they have to be filed/cut down considerably. I've got a nut file set from StewMac and I picked up a chainsaw file that combined were able to cut slots the right size. It's not an easy job, because everything is at an angle, but I was able to figure it out.
I have a Combustion that started life as a Trans-Black. The first owner was in a Punk/Funk/Metal band in Corpus Christi, Texas and decided it wasn't the right color for him and painted it purple. He put an NG pickguard on it and moved the pickup to the NG position. I love this bass but hate the paint-job. It looks like an Earl Sheib budget job or rattlecan.
I have been looking at painters soliciting work on the internet and actually spoke at length with one on the phone. I liked the guys work and he seemed to know his stuff, but had some very bad reviews a few years back here on TB. Here is one of his jobs that I really liked.:

I have a local guy that has done some repair work. He is a master luthier and does really nice work, but mostly accoustic guitar/Martin type stuff. He probably could do a fine job but is always stacked up for months. He mostly shoots Nitro and does a lot of classic bursts, etc. He works on guitars, mandos, every type of stringed instrument. I have seen some of his urethane jobs and they are nice. I am comfortable with him because I can drive to his shop, but I know it isn't really his expertise and he is so stacked up.
So, since I have decided against Sims and the local guy. I need to figure out who and where. I would really like someone within 3-4 hours driving distance, but that isn't absolutely necessary if I get enough good feedback on someone. Searching TB, I found Marty Bell, Pat Wilkins, and Invalid Link Removed. Those are all too far to drive. There is a guy that is a supporting member on TB that is south of Cincinnati and I plan on being in Cincinnati sometime in the next month. Anybody heard of CinCityCustoms ?

Nice guy, nice bass too. I think he uses automobile paint, crazy hot rod stuff. I'd like to use him some day maybe.

I played a Combustion strung F# standard. If you are thinking the added scale length is enough to remove all the wolftones, it isn't. Every note on the F# had a tone of overtones. That being said, getting a new nut cut is easy-peasy. I would echo the suggestion of just getting a blank and shaping it down to size. If you are not comfortable cutting your own nut, I wouldn't think it would cost more than an hour of bench time and a few bucks for the nut of your choice.
Yeah, that is the guy. I spoke to him a long time ago about it. Either right before or right after I purchased the bass. How do you like the paint on the bass you got from him?
I have struggled with deciding how to refinish, if I should refinish, where I should if I do... etc... I really like this bass and don't see myself parting with it. I have gone back and forth in my mind about taking it all the way down and going back to some transparent finish or a burst, or just doing a solid color. I was just looking at the Dingwall website and really like the Purple NG2 that is there. I like that purple better than mine.
Does that bass have hipshot bridges on there? Is this something new with Dingwall or a custom?
I like this a lot. Mine is a regular Combustion with an NG pickguard on it. I don't have a painted headstock, but like that a lot. Painting the headstock would add to the paint job and the cost, and I would have to deal with the logo.

yep. He does great work and Roxy at least used to be connected with USACG, and everything I've seen come out of that was great. There's a point where you sometimes just have to send a thing a way to get it done. I don't know that I'd trust anyone around here to do a Dingwall either.

This is the new Dingwall designed bridge. It shows up on the newer batch of NG's and also the D-Birds.
I have one of the new 'plum crazy' NG2's on order as well. Although I believe production delays keep pushing it back.
This is probably the same problem that is keeping newer Combustion models from the shops too, since I know someone was questioning that as well.

Mo did an amazing job routing and drilling my SP5 to add an FDV bridge, and Fausto did a paint job that looks factory. There is not one single flaw, none, zero.
@kirkdickinson - get in touch with Mo to have your bass redone by Fausto. Fantastic price, beyond professional, and results that will look factory done or better.
Random note, but today I used some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound to repair some ugly problems on the finish of my trans black Combustion. This picture shows where the problems were. I would have taken before pictures...but I was fairly embarrassed about the poopie super glue spot fix I attempted...but now it's looking GREAT.

I missed something. What is the problem keeping the Combustion’s from getting to the shops?
The new bridges look similar to the hipshot mono bridges but definitely not the same. Who makes them and are they available for purchase?
That purple one you like is just the new version of the combustion NG2. It's a signature combustion model that has EXPLODED on the scene. The major changes are the bridge pieces and the rounded pick up covers as of 2017. I believe they are hipshot bridge.
The problem with dingwalls in general hitting the masses is simply supply and demand. More demand then supply.
I'm so impulsively dying all of a sudden to try a D bird and maybe purchase a 4 string thrash machine and I checked at l and m today and they didn't even have a sku for it yet.
It's wonderful the success Sheldon and crew are having but growing pains sure can hurt!!!
