So, I played my NG2 briefly at practice yesterday.
All the reports of a 'weak' G string seem to have come true. I didn't have time to try to eq my amp for that bass in particular, but the G string was completely non-existent in the mix. I mean completely and utterly absent. Gone.
I'm very disappointed.
My instrument settings:
*Volume dime-d.
*4 way switch on the second from top when rotated left to right (looking from the top). I think I was in humbucker mode.
*all three tones set to the center detent.
Playing through my trusty Mesa Walkabout and a 1x15 cab. The amp and cab are very present and audible with every other bass I own...

I was so utterly disappointed I just put it down and played my '68. Everything works for that one, so its always my #1...
I've never heard of that or had that problem. Sounds like it may be specific to your rig. That said, I don't use 15" speakers either but I can't imagine that would be the issue.
As usual. Really cool stuff there funk. To describe it the first thing that came to mind was organically robotic I guess. Maybe robotic is the wrong word but like artificial intelligence in a way.
I have to say though I was surprised it looked as though most of the playing was with your thumb considering your usual style.

I had a P-Tone put into my Combustion. I didn’t notice anything wierd in passive mode (it sounded fantastic); however, when I switch it to active there’s a loud pop and and overwhelming loud hum.
I swapped batteries and still does it so, I’m pretty sure the pickup was wired up wrong. Does anyone know how to fix it???

I've never heard of a weak G string issue on a Dingwall. Stingrays, yes!
The G on my NG-2 and other Dingwalls is awesome. The whole fretboard is very even which is why I love them so much.

Thank you so much, Nate! You may not realize it but those words mean SO much! Playing with this group I needed that crazy tone, which I couldn't get with my fingers, so I played a good portion of the runs with my thumb. Thanks a lot for taking the time to listen and write your opinion. And organic robotic/AI is exactly what we were going for. You nailed it right on the head!
Nooo! Manufacturing issues mean my orange NG-2 is four more weeks away! But that blue they have in stock looks amazing. Hmm.
It's an interesting sound and tone you have there. I would expect a driven sound like that in a heavy band with guitars, but you have keyboard/synth/pads/electronic going with it with a lot of lush soundscapes going on. The bass sounds so consistent that if I didn't know otherwise, I would think that was sequenced or programmed!
I really appreciate the kind words, Smallmouth_Bass! It took a lot of hours in the shed to get this tune up to speed and tight. In all honesty, it took a month of multiple hours of practice every day, just on this song.
So I am glad it sounds so consistent! Thanks for taking the time to listen and having an open mind because I know this music is different than what's out there.
It could just be the frequencies it sits in. It is kind of voiced like a stringray so it's not surprising. Also keep in mind that it has a unique sound that works for some people in some styles. There is a reason I don't own any dingwalls anymore ( I owned 4 different ones). I miss the great design, the flawless construction and the great ergonomics but the sound's never really worked for me. People may suggest that you are using it wrong but you might just not like it. I have kind of experienced this in the past with my NG-2. For me, it was a dead string...once I got a fresh pack on strings on the response across all the strings was very even. The string was noticeably dead, like popping it didn't even get me much of a rise in it's sound in the mix.
At the time I was using Kalium strings, which I don't use anymore. I haven't experienced that with Dingwall or Payson strings.
I've always practiced with a DI, and my rig is a fEARful 15/6.
I have a fresh set of Dingwall strings -- I bought them with the bass, assuming the existing set would be dead. I can try them. As soon as the guitar on my bench moves off, I'm going to check the batteries then try new strings...
I really like the tones I get out of the E,A and D strings. With a string mute and/or my graphic eq pedal I can achieve all sorts of pleasing tones -- from modern and hard thru classic rock thumpy and round. If I can have a functional G, this bass is going to be killer for what I want it for.
