I've been running the payson reduced core on my Z35 in D standard tuning and once again. They sound awesome including for a metal situation but they aren't the sound that I want to hear coming back at me for the "turned up to 11 metal in your face" situation. I'll be putting payson stainless steel back on the Z35 next string replacement. That stainless B string on the long scale is so AWESOME!

I switched to a set of Black Beauties on my SJ5 a couple of months ago and they still sound new. I'm sold on them on my SJ5 but I'm not in a metal band. As for SS I've never tried them. Always gone nickel coated. But I think I'll buy a set for my Z3.

That's the shop's photo of my ABZ 6/3, that I unexpectedly bought on a trip some months ago because it was the only 6 string bass I've ever been able to properly play. Not to mention the ridiculously amazing tone.

Totally. I think it's coming on a year I've had them on the SJ and they retain for sure.

Have fun with the stainless. The clarity is amazing. Could be too much for lotsa folks.

I find stainless to be the perfect match for my AB1 3x. I was not happy with nickels at all on the 3x, and even nickel steels are not as pleasing to my ear for the 3x as they are for my AB1 2x. When I put steels on my 3x, I knew I had finally found the right string. I have a set of Dingwall stainless steels on it now, and plan to try the Payson stainless on it as well. At some point I plan to try the FDV's in it, but stainless steels seem the ideal match currently.

Still dont know what strings are right for me. I have Dingwall nickel and stainless steel strings and both sound good and at same time not so good. Are there any other strings that I can try to this Lee Sklar model? I'm living in Finland and its allmost impossible to find strings here to my Dingwall. I really like this bass,but finding MY sound is still at work. Neck is best ever and I used to have Foderas , Smiths, Alembics etc...before. I used to have also Dingwall AB II and it was soundwise more MY sound . I think that pickup placement in Sklar model is main reason to this bass's sound. Sometimes it sounds amazing and sometimes well....not so amazing. I tried to raise and lower the pickups ,but still there is something. Any advices? I used to like kind of "Jaco with steroids" sound for years now.

I think it may be more the pick up model vs placement. You have the super fatties in the sklar which are less mid driving they other pick up models. Unfortunately I don't believe you can order different pick ups for that style of shell. Having both styles myself I honestly would have to say if that is the sound your going for you may just have the wrong bass. Perhaps try the picks set to series, in passive mode with the tone fusion pot rolled back to about 6 with some stainless strings. Either that or activate that glock and crank those mids. Perhaps payson strings which you should be able to order online. @Blues Cat should be able to help you. Perhaps the reduced core string might be up your alley as well.

Seriously, THE most versatile bass I've ever come across...nothing else I've played can jump from crushing pick style tones to super fat finger funk like this bass can, not even my NG :D

The above clip has a TON of top end rolled off to achieve that darker, more vintage style tone; there is a lot of brightness and sparkle available if that's the side of the MM fingerstyle sound that you're looking for :thumbsup:
