Dingwall Owners Club

Luminlay has another style of side markers with black surrounding the glowing part, much more contrast than the plain dots. I prefer the plain dot since the whole thing glows.

Installing side dots is pretty simple.

I’d just use a sharpie for temporary marks.

Up high, above 12th fret, the side dots are a bit ahead of the treble side frets. It just takes some getting used to.

Best thing is eyes closed, blindfolded, or in the dark practice. Let the pattern light up in your brain and listen.

Hi
Anybody here interested about this mint condition Dingwall Lee Sklar model? Bass is located in Finland and includes original Levys gigbag and Levys made Dingwall leather strap with Dunlop straplocks and all original tools.

Anyone here dealt with or know about Bass Direct UK? They have a thing I might want to buy.

The fact that they link to this thread is a good start...
I bought my Super P5 from them, and they were absolutely exemplary in their service, communication and shipping. I bought the bass on Monday last week, and had the bass delivered the same Thursday to Sweden with UPS. The bass was shipped less than two hours after payment had been received.

I couldn't recommend them any more if I could, 11/10 service. A perfect example of customer service.

Yep. Love their customer service :)

So I just got word from Grasshopper at Bass Central that my new 'road' Dingwall is done and should be shipped by the end of next week. It's one of the '2017' NG-2's in 'plum crazy'. A bit of backstory for those who haven't been around long and since I don't post much...

I have two Dingwalls currently (a third, AB1 was sold to Julian, who's also around these parts)...both are 'Dingwalls of note'. One is the infamous custom Rastaburst Voodoo-Zebra, and my main player. The second came by way of Steve Gibson and is one of the original run of Voodoo-Primas from 1993 or so. They're both great basses in entirely different ways, and doubtless irreplaceable. We've been doing lots of road gigs lately (over 90 gigs in 2017 in the northeast US), and van life, new stages in new towns and lots of strangers inhabiting backstage areas has made me want a 'lower profile' instrument with me.

That's all fine and good right? Well, I had discussions with the shop and Sheldon and they all thought I should really try the NG-2 even though I've never been a 'bridge pickup' guy. BUT...the newest NG's come routed for 3X. You can see where this is going. I'd love your thoughts on a handful of things.

-First off the Switch:
  • D-Bird or standard 3X. I'm leaning towards the 3X. Neither does quite what I'd like but the 3X is closer...with a caveat.
  • 3X Switch: I'd most likely 'flip the switching' by that I mean instead of having Bridge/Middle in series, I'd have the option for Neck/Middle in series and Neck/Bridge in parallel. That would be the same wiring as standard but with the 'bridge' pickup being moved to the neck slot. Generally I use the 2 pickups series or parallel settings. I've never used a 'solo' pickup in 12 years of playing dingwalls.
  • Pitch me a good argument to do the D-Bird switch. As far as I know it gives: all three pickups, middle pickup soloed, middle and bridge, bridge soloed. None of the bridge/options I tend to live in.
  • An ideal 'BurningSkies' switch would look like B/N series, B/N parallel, 3x, B/M. I don't have the brainpower to make this item. ;)
-Second, which pickup:
  • I love the Dingwall Neodymium FD-3's. I run all of mine in series internally. I'll probably stay there. But...
  • Do I get another FD-3 'bridge' pickup or FD-3 'neck'. Think about the fact that Neck/Middle will be one of my switching options.
  • Do I get one of the newer 'P-Tone' Pickups, if so, do I run it in the neck or middle slot? Will it play nice with the other pickups when being run either in series (N/M) or parallel (N/B).
Other thoughts and ideas on the pickups?

Last, further out there and not right away. I'm considering adding a passive treble roll off if possible to the control layout. I think this is do-able, but correct me if I'm wrong. With the DG tonecapsule not touching the true upper treble region of the frequency spectrum...I feel like this may be a decent and interesting idea. Remember, I have the original Dingwall hybrid treble control on my Rastaburst. It works as a 'vintage style' passive tone roll off on one side of the notch and an active preamp treble boost on the other side.

What say y'all?

I did exactly what you plan to do on my 2017 version NG2. I put a neck FD3 in the empty cut out and rewired it with the D-Bird selector, with the 3 on option. I think it all depends on the musical genre you live in. I ended up removing everything I added and going back to stock. It was the Music Man mojo that promoted me to purchase a NG2 after trying it out at the 2016 Winter NAMM show. But for dub style music I think you will absolutely love the D-Bird 3 on option. That would be the only setting I would use in a dub /reggae context. It's massive and any subtle changes can be made with the Darkglass pre. As for pickups, I replaced the FD3s in my SJ5 with FDVs. The FDVs [Corrected] are more mid pronounced, kind of like a P bass tone. I still have FD3s in my Z3 and NG2. I like the FD3s better than the FDVs when playing bridge neck position. But that's not an option with the D Bird. It's really easy to switch out pick ups on the new Dingwalls. No soldering required. If I were you I'd buy one of each or even three if you want to try a P tone as well. Let your ears be your guide!

Definitely add a P-Tone. Try it in the neck and middle. Your ears’ll tell you where you like it.

My hesitancy comes from the fact that the two positions I live in are the parallel & series Neck/Bridge settings. The D-Bird gets rid of those altogether. Over hundreds of shows, I've used those to good effect. Lately I've been using the parallel setting rather than series...it sacrifices some volume for a wider deeper tone. In the recording setting I moved to the parallel as the series was 'clogging' up the tone making it a little less open and defined. I ended up taking that live and just pushing my EQ a bit to have the best of both worlds. I'd love a 3x option along with N/M and the N/B options, but that's a perfect world and I'd need to find someone to figure out that switching.

Definitely add a P-Tone. Try it in the neck and middle. Your ears’ll tell you where you like it.

Luckily the switch is non solder, so I can play with it a bit...It may be a winner in the neck slot. That way I can have it solo, neck/middle together in series, then neck/bridge parallel.

Scroll up to the lee sklar above hit the buy now option, sell the ng2 Done. Super fatties.

Or since that is not at all what you're thinking perhaps consider the SF2 for your style of tunage?

I think I need an intervention!!!

I've been hooked on the Zs for a while now and most of you guys know the amazing SJ I have.
Every time I get in a band situation it's a Z that I play. Im finding the string spacing being one of the most dominant factors. On the couch I'm fine with the SJ but that leads to practicing music that isn't relevant to any of the stuff I should be practicing. I've been considering putting her up for trade again. This time with only trade options being another Z in a combo I don't have fretted or fretless.

Am I off my rocker? Should I be "saving" this beauty for a future occasion??? Like when my arms don't want to reach as far anymore. Lol. Or should I send it to a home where she will get love now.

My hesitancy comes from the fact that the two positions I live in are the parallel & series Neck/Bridge settings.

If you're only really needing these settings, why not save yourself some cash and hassle and just move the NG2 middle pickup to the regular combustion neck/bridge configuration and pick up a new pickguard.
No need to change the wiring or add a switch etc. and it will give you Bridge, Bridge/Neck - series, Bridge/Neck Parallel and Neck solo.
