Disgraceful ads--why does TB post them?

TB has no control over what ads you do or don't see.
My opinion: if seeing ads on TB is the biggest problem you have this week, you're in pretty darn good shape.

The ads I'm getting today are for Motorola, Progressive insurance, and what I guess is a clothing company called WRST or something like that.

Yeah, to reaffirm - TB does not control the ads, they're from an outside service, although there are some parameters the owner can set - you shouldn't see ads for actual NSFW material, for instance, or anything like that. Everyone gets different stuff, whatever the advertising agency's algorithms pop up for you, which might come from browsing history or just your general demographics. You don't have to have browsed precisely what's being advertised, it's more the kind of calculation that "users who went to the X website are more like to reply to Y ad."

Just as a tangential thought - if you watch Jeopardy, check the ads. It's mostly retirement investment services, various medicines, and vacation cruises (at least that's what I see). It's not a show about retirement or drugs or cruise ships, particularly; but they know they have an older, better-off demographic of viewers and that's the target audience for those kinds of products.
