Distortion on bass

I don't think "peng" is an age thing... unless it really is the newest of young-adult/teen slang. I'm 29 and this is the first time I've heard it.
In regard to distorted bass though, here's one of the founding fathers:

Funny, I use this EXACT combination and STILL have things that I need pedal help for. That basic tone is really hard to beat as a pure tone, don't get me wrong. There are things I do with feedback looping and fuzz/filter/synth style tones that it still won't do on its own.

I’m 60, and still like some (not all) heavy music.

By the way, every magnetic pickup ever installed on a bass has (due to the spacings of things) some non-linearity/ distortion. There is no truly “clean” bass guitar signal. I, for one, like some additional distortion at times, but not a lot.

I could understand that. With a lot of the music I grew up with (mid 60s to mid 70s) the sense of community - and the social aspect of going to a concert or catching a band at a club or a rally - was a big part of the whole music experience. It wasn’t something to just listen to. Music was more something you entered into and became a part of.

I get that a lot, sometimes i'll see always see the same people at gigs and never anywhere else, and i only ever recognise them by face, never by name, even though we do talk a lot

The only peeve I personally have about full-on distorted bass is that it gets really hard to fit a piano into the mix. If you do it right, you don't need no guitars though.

One of my favourite sub-genres of metal has got to be stoner, it is a relatively underground scene but the SM gigs i have been to are way better than any others I've been to. The main reason for this is the bass. I love the sound of bass with distortion, so a whole genre devoted to distorted bass? that's the one for me.

Generally, the heavier the music gets, the lower the guitars get down tuned, some times even down to F# standard. However in other cases its the bass that takes the cake and is used as the main instrument, with the guitar just playing psychedelic riffs high up.

The bass is such a cool instrument, i never got as much satisfaction from playing the guitar. Especially with Distorted Bass.

I use my Epiphone EB-0 through my RAT pedal and it sounds way better than a guitar would do through it.

Back in my formative days, I was a big Jack Bruce fan, and also was into Felix Papalardi from Mountain. Not sure what these guys played through, but they both played Gibson’s with that huge humbucker, and both were extremely distorted. Probably the first two that had major commercial success with that type of sound.

I had a pair of EB3s back in the 70s, and can only imagine that they would sound great for what you are doing.

I voted "sounds peng" because that appeared to be the positive response, as the other two were negative. Yes I totally dig distorted and overdriven bass, no I do not know what peng means. It takes some level of self control not to gobble up every boutique fuzz/od/distortion pedal I see. What are some underground SM bands with the bass tone you dig?

I think just about everybody goes through a phase of heavy sounding music....when they’re a teenager.

I'm in my 40's and heavy sounding music is still my #1 thing, even new stuff, including what the OP is talking about.

The first bands that piqued my interest in distorted bass, and this before I ever thought I would play bass, was Godflesh, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower and Excruciating Terror.

I love dirty bass! It's the best. And it is actually used across more genres than some may think. My signal is effected with some type of dirt at least 90% of the time. Mostly OD, a Damnation MBD1. I love that thing. Check out Death From Above 1979 @DNbass17 . They are one of the more popular bass and drum duos around that used dirt always on pretty much.

Using dirt on bass isnt just for heavy music although it does suite it well. I mean, the Beastie Boys used bass fuzz a bit back in the day. One of their biggest songs was built around one of the raunchiest gnarliest fuzziest bass sounds around. So IMO, its more about how you use it or rather, how you could compose it into the song. Man I love dirt
