Do I Deserve a Boutique Bass?

Ok so i laid my hands on a Dingwall Combustion and was very impressed. I didn't play one, but the local dealer has an AB1 Afterburner in stock. I am very very tempted by that. I understand the difference among the Canadian basses and they seem worth it. Honestly it's actually rare that I'm in the position to afford one. I am only half joking about deserving it, but I really am a hack. I see players better that me constantly. In fact most seem to be especially among my age. My only real confidence stems from the fact that other people want me to play for them. I have never considered that kind of money for a bass, but that B string is to die for. Even the Combustion makes my Stingray 5 feel like an old clunker! Aaaaaagh!!

It's not about what you "deserve," it's about what you can afford. My attitude is "don't buy something you can't afford to replace."

There are several affordable multiscale basses, including from Ibanez and Cort.

If you like it, want it and can afford it, buy it. As to whether or not you deserve it, that is a question I have never asked myself.

If playing the bass brings you joy and playing a nicer bass that you have worked to be able to acquire will make you more joyful in playing. It's a no-brainer. As long as you can afford it.

If all else fails, just remember it's better to regret something you did than something you did not do.

there is exactly one requirement to purchase any instrument: money. If you meet that requirement, you’re qualified. Ding away! Those things are great.

Do you work hard? Do you treat your family/friends, and people that you run across with respect? Are your bills caught up? Do you wake up, and smile most days? Have you made sacrifices for the betterment of others?

If yes, YOU DESERVE ANYTHING THAT YOU WANT. You've EARNED it.

The rule of the dollar/loonie is all that matters in this world and the question is simple: do you have the money? If so, do what you want.

Sometimes a boutique instrument will be hard to replace a non boutique instrument. It just depends on how you feel for the instrument, sometimes low quality can outclass the high end instruments and I’ve heard it many times throughout players I’ve met in college and out in the gigging world!

Also, deserve?! Comes off a bit self entitled to put it bluntly..

If you play chamber music then you need a chambered bass. Play rock music, you need a Rockbass.

I believe that "what is deserved, is EARNED." Whether monetary, or by EFFORT." Did one put in the EFFORT to be ABLE to afford such an acquisition? Or... are they ENTITLED to such a trophy?

It sounds cliche but I have started realize that life is too short not to play what you love playing . If it costs a lot, make it happen cap’n

when I started to lose the relentless energy of my twenties I came to realize that I don’t care what it looks like or if I get a ding (just one so far) , im going to take my instruments out, play them at Starbucks , enjoy the poopie out of them. Plus, between you and me, owning a fancy looking bass keeps my chops up because not only do I play more, I am keenly aware that if someone sees me with it they will expect me to be able to play (pro tip: don’t pull a Jaco riff, play Skin Tight and throw in a quick fill or dead note and you’ll be golden )

Which probably means that you're a MUCH better player than you give yourself credit for.

If you can afford it, GO FOR IT! You deserve it.
