it depends, my Lakland 5 sits about mid hight so i can throw it around a bit more (i just tend to be more active with the neck of that bass)
and my SR506 sits up high so i can get to the whole neck easily

I definitely think that lower feels more comfortable, but it's usually harder to keep the fretting hand steady. So it all depends on what I'm playing.

I actually vary mine a bit, by 3-5 inches or so depending on the gig.
For my hiphop/neo soul and reggae outtings, I find I'm wearing it right on my waist. I used to slap a lot and wear it even higher, but these days that's not such a factor. For some pop and rock gigs that are mostly pickstyle, I wear it a tad lower. And it depends on the bass. I wear my Jerry Jones a bit higher than my P-basses for example. Dunno why, it just all seems to make sense this way and feel right . . ..

when i am home practicing i wear it like a friggen neck tie. naw i wear it so its pretty much on my thigh when i sit down thats about right when im standing also.

I've yet to decide where to wear my bass.

If I have it high, my right arm's elbow suffers (right hander) and hurts from being bent all the time, plus I have trouble reaching the lower frets (I'm not small, but reaching all the way out for those frets with my arm hanging in the air gets tiring).

If I have it low, well I can't fret so well, but my right elbow is happy.

And medium, well, I STILL can't fret so well at medium height.

I'm not good at playing sitting down either cos of my elbow..

Depends on which bass I play. My all out metal/hard rock bass is played lower.
The bass I use for prog rock/metal/gothic/funk is belly level.
The piccolo bass and my bass I use for chording is set pretty high.
The difference is only about 3 inches between eash bass so it is not huge. Plus I don't play sitting down much.
