No fear, really, but I still carry spare used strings anyway. Broken bass strings happened to me twice in the space of a single month several decades ago, and it was a pain. I had to go around to another nearby club to see if another bass player had a spare. This had never happened to me before, and it's never happened in the 30+ years since. I don't really worry about it. But the spares are there in one pocket of my soft case just in case. They don't take up much space and don't weigh much, so why not?

When I change strings, I always keep the old set in the case/bag, just in case. Never needed it, but just to be safe.

My first time ever restringing an acoustic guitar one of the strings snapped while I was loosening it and it whipped me right in the forehead.
The only time I've ever "broken" a bass string was by wearing through the wrap of a black nylon tapewound.

No fear of breaking strings.

Weeeeell actually... No.

But! There are certain strings with a really trash design (khm LaBella khm) that do like to pop especially when restringing for couple reasons:

1. E string of Depp Talkin Labellas tends to wrap around the tuning peg beyond the actual wrapping, that's definitely a weak point

2. Never string flats body through. Just don't.

Here you go again with your obsession with breaking strings!

Do you have pathological fear of having a flat tire every time you drive? Do you ever try to find out what air pressure would take to make it burst?

That seemed a bit rude.

To the O.P.: The only time I have ever broken a string (and it was the E string) was when I was using very old rounds and I was in a (second) band where I had to do a lot of slapping and plucking. It was just a rehearsal (and it was on a Sunday), but I managed to break the E string.

My main band had a gig that night and this was before the days of "Big Box" music stores (1982 or '83?) and there was only one place in the area where I could get bass strings ("Campus Music" on George St.). Their cheapest set was $55.00 (they knew they had me over a barrel).

Lesson learned: I've carried spare strings ever since.
