Do you use fEARful?

Isn't this the point about bass cabs? Hopkins likes his Peavey 2-15 BW and says, "I like the way it sounds." He goes with what his ears tell him. I bow before you!

That's the basis for buying a cab. Whatever it is.

Some would say that Peavey bass cabs are bad. Some others would say fEARfuls are not necessary.

It's all about what we hear with our ears and what we like.

I'd personally love to hear a fEARful. A dual 15 + mid range (no tweeter please!) But my Berg NV 215 (2-15s + a 6") gives me everything
I like about bass sound. And my Acme Low B 2-10 is a wonderful smaller cab that sounds like an 18" or 15" cab (the tweeter is turned off).

Is fEARful the cat's meow in bass cabs? Probably for some.

One thing I've learned here on Talk Bass and from personal experience..............let us be the judge of what we want bass to sound like.

I just finished my 15/6 a few weeks ago. So far I really like it. It has a good sound, the response is smooth and even all the way up. I went sans tweeter cause I don't like a lot of sparkle, and the mid gives me enough. Unfortuneatly I went and broke my arm the following week, so band rehersal is off a few more weeks.

I built my fEARful for two reasons. 1) I was able to visit a local builer (Scabbey Road, great guy lots of fun) to try some fEARful and fEARless designs. This allowed me to see what they were and what they were not. These cabs are not a magic box that will inherently make you sound awesome. What I found is that using a fEARful removes the cabinet as the week link in the sound chain. Within reason it will not distort, fart out or change the sound you have.

2) I found my existing cabinet lacking in the low end and power handling abilities. That said, the cabinet I do have is a beautiful sounding cab in lower volume settings, and I am not sure if I will sell it or keep it.

Ultimately, if your happy with what you have, then a fEARful (or anything else) isn't for you. Unless you just get GAS and want to get one almost for the sake of getting one, and let's be honest that drives nearly half of all our gear purchases. However, if you find what you have to be lacking, then TRY a fEARful out. But I certainly recomend trying one before buying or building. Certainly extremely high quality, and it has a price tag to go with it.

My kids are too young for me to even think that far ahead (6 months and 23 months), but already I cant wait!

Anyone have any more thoughts on using a fEARful to emulate a mini SVT rig with a Sansamp VT bass pedal - how well would it work?

Have you ever played the VT in to a recording console of some kind and played it back through monitors?

If you liked the way it sounds, you would like the way it sounds amp'ed through a fEARful.

I don't have one, but I sure do want one. Just can't afford it. I might get one of those Carvin LS1503's to hold me over until I can get the real deal.

This is why I built one. I was originally looking at a Mesa PH212 at the time. It was a sweet sounding cab. But being a father, husband and with a hefty mortgage in a sown economy, I couldn't swing the cost. I took a leap of faith on building a fEARful 12/6. I'm glad I did. I was able to 1st build a cab. ($50) Then I bought the X-over parts for around another $50. Putting these together took a month or so. Then over the next few months I bought the remaining parts & drivers. I figured if I didn't like it I could sell it for the cost of parts. I loved it and built more.....:bassist: Also if you look at my 1st post I thought fEARful users would be under 3% of TB, I still think that. Carry on & to each his own, if you like your cab ...great.

You shouldnt if you like what you have. That said you should try everything you can if you get a case of GAS.

Well, I do try out other bass rigs from time to time. I think I heard a Fearful over at JGR's house, but I'm not sure. In short, there are a lot of great sounding cabinets.

I would definitely be open to a Fearful if I wanted another hi-fi cabinet. Acme and the new Bergantinos would also be high on my list.

Im not sure what all Jonathan has in his cab stable. Could have been a fEARful, but I know he has a few of his own cab builds that run woofers/mid drivers.

I have tried the 15/6/1 and 12/6/1 fEARful, but just could not fall in love with them as others have. I tend to think that they are overkill for my needs as far as volume goes, and as a 4 stringer, I don't need that massive low end the LF sub woofers provide. Obviously, Greenboy realizes this as he has come up with a variety of other designs for bass players wanting something different, but still backed up with an excellent design. If I had the cash, I would commission a Basic 115 built for me.
