Do you use fEARful?

Frankie, I see you are gigging an Essex. I used one, too—I'm your age. The fEARful 15/6/1 I have is just about same size as an Essex.

I'm really digging it. Hope you get a chance to try one.

I actually considered modifying one to accept a 15/12/6, not for any particular reason, other than back in the day I had a couple of Baldwin bass amps. One of them was set up with a 15 and a 12, the it was exceptional for the time. The other was just a 15, and there was a clear difference in their tonal ability.
I always liked that combination, too.

My thought was to add a filler plate to a 1515/66 to adapt one of the 15" openings to a 12" speaker.

The 3015 and the 3012 have the same tonal profile, there's no real gain in doing this. This is one of the reasons that its more effective to mate two different sized drivers in a fEARful rig without causing problems in your rig's acoustic performance.

I spent several hours today on the sites where you can order the kits. I wonder if the new GK MB800 fusion would match with the 12/6 and the 12/sub? The web sites for the supplied speakers show that the two 12s handle 450 watts and the 6 handles 100 watts. At 8 ohm the MB800 puts out 560 watts max, so it appears I could use one or both cabs and just be safe with my levels. Anyone used the new MB800 with these cabs?

The 'handle 450w' thing is sort of a 'flexible' thing. That's a 450w thermal rating, rather than the displacement potential for this speaker. Similar to the 3015LF, I always consider these closer to an 800w speaker, given we don't play 'continuous' bass through them. Using an amp that's capable of producing way more than 450 per cab, I have had no problems and no signs of failure. I HAVE gotten the speakers to the edge of break up and the end volume at that point would suggest that you're really hitting them in the 800-1000w range.

I use a PLX1602 bridged into my 12/6. 8 ohms, 1000 watts. It's fine. It gets too loud to stand in front of long before the speakers complain. I use the same amp into my 1515/66, 1600 watts into 4 ohms. Neither cab has a problem with it at all, just be smart and not ask the cab to do something it can't do.

I believe Tori AKA BASSIST used the MB800 with that set-up and liked it. I used that cab set-up with an RB700-II and also my SVP-Pro/Carvin HD1500. It flat out rocks and those cabs will handle all but the loudest metal guitarist.

+1

I've benched my power amp at 96 volts before clipping and around 101 volts fully limited at 100hz which equate to something like 1100-1300 Watts at 8ohms. There's been times when the volume coming from my single 12/6/1 was to the point where I was certain that I was going to blow something. Fortunately the woofer and midrange have stayed intact. I have smoked two of the asd1001's, but since I've upgraded to the Selenium 202Ti. I haven't had any more issues. That driver seems to play nicer with the 6nd410 to my ears as well.

I rarely take the 12sub anywhere other than outdoor events, and even then it's usually just to get the 12/6/1 up closer to my head.

Yup, I, ToriN had a mb800 for a good while with my 12/6 + 12sub stack. Very nice pairing. I now have seller's remorse and have thought about buying another one with the idea of making my 12/6 into a 1u combo. That would be sweet. :bassist:

The plans were published, in the public domain, for anyone to use.

It'd be like ripping off linux.
I just checked here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

and greenboy prefers that commercial cab builders, such as LDS, do not use his plans for profit.

I am not saying that greenboy is the first guy to marry a subwoofer with a midrange driver utilizing a crossover. However, his driver choices, crossover design, porting, cab dimensions etc comprise his plans and he is the first guy to put those particular components into play.

That said, in the beginning there weren't Authorized Builders, so if you wanted a cab built LDS would be a great option. I have owned a couple of LDS cabs and Don does do excellent work.

Dave gave plans to users. Don built cabinets when engaged by users as a cabinet builder. The plan is not patentable (due to being non-original) and the "commercial prohibition" has absolutely no legal standing.

I've blown one up to kingdom come. Modulus Q6 with the low end cranked playing reggae with a QSC CX120v bridged into mono (2000 watts RMS 20-20khz at .08% THD) and the clip lights lighting up. It let the magic smoked out in glorious billows but withstood quite a bit of it and put out a lot of sound before it gave up. Pretty nasty smell.

Hard to say, I was using a BAM(500w @8ohms) into a 4 ohm 115tvx bw. Lost 2 like that. Lost an 8 ohm from a 215d the same way. I was down tuning to drop C and likely with a ton of dirt. "Clean" they would all fart out before the DDT came on. Also the BAM was a combo and the 210s never blew.

Your rig may benefit from TBr fdeck's HPF pre to protect your speaker's low end.[/OT]

I put 1500w into my 15/6. Took it like a champ. It was LOUD. I was doing this in a rehearsal studio with a band that was way too loud and I was actually asked by the rehearsal studio guys to turn down. Never had that happen before. That band was crazy loud and my earplugs were well used.

No, I do not. I want to, and have the speaker components for the 15/6/1. I need to get the cabinet (wish I had a table saw as it would make life much easier) and the crossover, and then I will have one. Maybe after Christmas.
