Do you use fEARful?

I use mine exclusively.

If you are thinking of going the DIY route, shop carefully, and don't need to buy tools for the project, it will be well worth it.

I'd suggest a 12/6 cube with the less expensive Alpha 6 mid, and no horn. IMHO , this is the biggest bang for the buck. Once you have the experienced this cab, building another, either a sub, or a 15/6/1, will be easy to justify. If I had it do do over I'd have built a pair of 12/6's.

My 15/6/1's sound awesome, but the 12/6 gets all the action because it is smaller, lighter, and plenty loud.

fEarfuls make what ever you put through them sound better.

The build is half the fun. You get a boutique level cab for the cost of parts and your shop time. The plans are easy to build.

And brands that do use neo drivers generally use their own cheaper in-house speakers to save cost. And I agree; to get a cab that will perform as well as a fEARful and be as neutral will cost you more. Even to buy a fEARful rather than build it is a large price jump.

I think Leland's flatpacks are not only a great value, but a lot of fun to put together. He makes it really easy.

I've been happy with my Ampeg Fridge, maybe in 40 years when my back finally gives out I'll make the switch.

Maybe. I don't want to dissuade you from checking it out, but I lent my 15/6/1 to Garrett Sayers, who's a big SVT 8x10 fan, and he didn't really like the tonal difference. While I'm not an SVT fan, I recognize what it does and see how people love it.

The fEarful club has about 100 members. They're not a very big group, but they are very vocal.

That a misleading statistic. Lots of fEARful owners on TB aint in a "club" - I have 3 fEARful cabs & zero club memberships.

Even more fEARful owners aint on TB at all.

If you want a peek at the scope of the fEARful user base take a look at greenboy's forum - which has about a thousand "human confirmed" registered users:

That said the fEARful thing did start as a thought experiment by greenboy on the intertoob - including and especially on TB - and when he formalized his ideas into freeware plans many of the first adopters were TB'ers.

So TB fEARful-ites have always been a vocal group because to some degree the project arose from this community and the interest and support of some of its members and thus it would be odd if TB didn't have a dedicated group of fEARful users.

I too have no desire to be in a club, although I have two from the early days of fEARful and have no intention of ever switching. I laugh at "hi-fi" given I roll back most of the upper mids and highs anyway and have huge big deep lows and low mids.

+1

I got one, and a year later got another for another location.
Now I want a sub15!

Yeah, we talk a lot.

But when you crank big watts through a fEarful stack, the talking stops and your vision gets a little blurry.

I think the combination of a "freeware" design model, DIY cab builders, and grassroots growth through TB, (messy at times!) was a winning combination. It's been a really cool journey. I'm kind of itching to build another one. (Maybe after I finish the kitchen.)

I took my 15/6/1 and the 12/6 down to a Talkbass GTG last weekend. I haven't been playing out much in the past months. I'd forgotten just how good this stuff sounded. Didn't matter what amp we hooked up, GK 1001, Markbass, Genz Benz, or what bass, they all sounded clear and powerful, down to detuned B strings. Even the acoustic upright sounded super tight and clear.

I voted no, but that's because I haven't figured out whether I want to get one of Leland's 12/6 or 15/6 kits yet. I'm going Green at some point in the nearish future.
