Do you use fEARful?

I answered "no."

I jumped on the DIY bandwagon before the fEARful designs came out, and am still happy with what I've got. I'm mainly a jazz player, and the fEARfuls are more performance than I will probably ever need. By sacrificing some of the fEARful design goals, I'm able to push the size and weight down even further.

With that said, if I started playing louder music, I'd probably get a fEARful in a heartbeat. I'm also probably in a minority among bassists, in that I'd be willing to buy a speaker based solely on its specs.

I answered NO as well but I did own a "nEarful" for a short time. I was not "open" to the NearFul/Fearful vibe at the time so I blew it out like most of the women I meet online.

Oh sorry. TMI.

I use a fearful. I was a relatively early adopter, and built mine long before the price jump. I have one of the first 12/6 cubes that were constructed.

Very well thought out cabinet, and the sort of design that will stand as a benchmark for a long time. I'm very appreciative of GB's sharing that design publicly.

BTW, I agree with Mr. Deck, the fearful is overkill for jazz work. I use something else for that. Busted my knuckles one time too many going through doorways to the odd little hole in the walls where I get to play jazz.

Yea this does make sense: if you don't need it, it's overkill for you, wasting money, don't need the power but do need less bulk; What's the point?

I wouldn't trade my fearful for anything else for the five string country or Gospel work I get. It is all about matching the tool to the task at hand. I play multiple genres, for some I want what the fearful does, for other work there are other answers. Size, depth of tone, color of tone are all factors. Oh yeah, and so is price.

What micro head do you use?

I had barrowed a GK MB500 once and now use a Amped PF-500. The micro head that isn't exactly micro. For louder gig I use my SVP-Pro with HD1500 power amp, and add a 15/sub if needed. I've only ever needed the 15/sub for outdoor stuff so far. To be far on some small gigs our drummer will play e-drums if volume can be an issue, but the 12/6 can hold up with acoustic drums as well. I would really like to get a MBfusion down the road for my micro head.

The ability to be used for pretty much all genres is something I find very attractive. On my own an with friends it's mostly all rock and metal. But local scene is all country, bluegrass, blues, rockabilly etc. So gotta get something versatile to get gigs and join other bands. However, if you mainly focus in on one genre or one type of music/tone then I can totally see just getting a brand name cab that you like that does this sound well. If it colors it how you like it and is cheaper then why spend/do more?

We need a visual aid.

12/6 cube on a 15/6/1. I know, the cube flips over for matched mids. Cool Greenboy labels from Leland's Speaker Hardware.

I bought the 3012LF before the price hike, so the 12/6 came in at just under $300.

Duratex finish.

I built that!

The main selling point, at least as far as I read on these forums, is that fEarful cabs are very loud, and do not add any color to the signal sent to them.

That's all well and good, but I absolutely love the way my pair of GK410 NEO cabs color the tone of my 700rbII, and I love the way old Black Widow loaded Peavey 215d color the tone of my Eden E300T. I am told that a fEarful cab will get louder than my cabs, but honestly, I have never once been in a situation to where I have come close to maxing out the volume of the cabs I currently use. I'm sure they are awesome cabs, but I don't really have any desire to switch to a HI FI, PA style cab like a fEarful.

I have used Peavey black widows quite a bit, and do love the way they color my tone. I just don't like them blowing up, which I've done to a few.
My fearful 12/6/1 is a very capable cabinet with gobs of flexibility in tone. With the right eq and compression I can just about nail the my Peavey BW tone with my 12/6/1. A single foot switch and I cab do crystal clear hifi, never happened with the BWs.
I love the fearful so much i'm building my second, only this time bigger. I've never run into another IRL so i'm sure they are still very rare.
