Do you use fEARful?

but I don't really have any desire to switch to a HI FI
.

Does this sound 'hi-fi' to you?

Just curious. In that clip I am using a ff 15/6 and a gkmb500, bass is strung with flats.

In my opinion, the cab does have its own subtle voice, but generally reproduces what its fed. Certainly not just a hi-fi cab from my experience.

I have used Peavey black widows quite a bit, and do love the way they color my tone. I just don't like them blowing up, which I've done to a few.
My fearful 12/6/1 is a very capable cabinet with gobs of flexibility in tone. With the right eq and compression I can just about nail the my Peavey BW tone with my 12/6/1. A single foot switch and I cab do crystal clear hifi, never happened with the BWs.
I love the fearful so much i'm building my second, only this time bigger. I've never run into another IRL so i'm sure they are still very rare.

Just curious, how hard were you pushing your BW's because I have pushed mine pretty hard, and never even had them start to fart on me.

That sounds great, but how would the cab sound with a tube amp pushed to a slight over drive, or your MB with the hi-mids, boosted a bit and the boost about 3 o'clock, and the gain cranked a bit. The "imperfections" of my two 410's or my 215 are part of my overall tone, I think I would loose some of that with a fEarful.

I haven't tried mine with a tube amp yet, but I'm curious, do those glorious imperfections make it out to the PA? When I run my Showman/200S rig, I always mic the cabinet and soundguys love it. But with the fEARful, I am always confident that my DI signal matches what comes out of the cab, the soundguys bring up the fader flat and love it.

That a misleading statistic. Lots of fEARful owners on TB aint in a "club" - I have 3 fEARful cabs & zero club memberships.

Even more fEARful owners aint on TB at all.

If you want a peek at the scope of the fEARful user base take a look at greenboy's forum - which has about a thousand "human confirmed" registered users:

Valid point, but it at least gives an indication as to the relative obscurity of the cabinets relative to other brands. Of course, the number of members on the greenboy forum is equally misleading, wouldn't you agree? By comparison, the Ampeg club on TB has almost 1,000 members.

The OPs original observation is an interesting one, and seems to demonstrate my point in my original post. One would read the Amps forum and believe that a large percentage of TBers use some form of greenboy cab. It's not the case, of course, but that illusion is created by and handful of passionate members who post frequently about the brand.

To answer the OPs question, I own a LDS-built fEarful (well, close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades) but it hasn't left the corner of my music room in almost a year. Switched to Bergantino and haven't had the desire to unbury it since.

Doing DIY since I play bass (approx 25 years) and been there done that. Some 15 years ago I did build Fearfull kind of designs (15's with a dedicated mid with/without tweeter) but that couldn't give me the ultimate sound I heard in my head, now since a year or two I have the cab design I will probably never stray away from.

I play a tube amp through my fEARfuls, and when I am not I generally have a bit of grit in my signal chain.

I love the way they sound through my cabs. I dont shoot for "bedroom tone" so for me the real proof in in the mix. With the added presence I find that I can actually turn down a bit, and that I dont have to fight as much for sonic space. Are they for everyone? Nope, but what piece of gear is?

I play:

fEARful 1515/66/1
fEARful 12/6/1 x2
greenboy Duallyt

Have owned/played
fEARful 15/6
fEARful 1212/6
fEARless F112
Bassic15
Bassic12

The main selling point, at least as far as I read on these forums, is that fEarful cabs are very loud, and do not add any color to the signal sent to them.

That's all well and good, but I absolutely love the way my pair of GK410 NEO cabs color the tone of my 700rbII, and I love the way old Black Widow loaded Peavey 215d color the tone of my Eden E300T. I am told that a fEarful cab will get louder than my cabs, but honestly, I have never once been in a situation to where I have come close to maxing out the volume of the cabs I currently use. I'm sure they are awesome cabs, but I don't really have any desire to switch to a HI FI, PA style cab like a fEarful.

And that is completely understandable. If you like the color or way it pairs and don't need the volume or neutrality then you don't necessarily need a fEARful

I usually use a combination of DI and a miced cab

Agreed,

I would like to give one of those Duallys a work out one day. They seem much more up my ally than the Mid/Horn loaded designs.
