Doctor's appointment at 4...can't practice at 6!

I’d cancel practice too. Many doctors offices run rather late. Sometimes I won’t see my doctor until 45 minutes AFTER my appointment time. Plus, factor in time to get to doctors office (could be across town from home) and then to the practice spot (could be on another side of town)… I could see why he’d cancel.

Although, if I were really into a band, and practices were scheduled out in advance, I’d do my absolute best to arrange stuff to not have scheduling conflicts

Pet bug.
An appointment is a designated time.
Overruns occur but 45mins..? but anyway, it is what it is.

The bigger question here, dr appointment aside, is how committed the guy is.
Rehearsals are not common so if we need it, we need it and no one pulls out unless very important and then no one questions it.
I'd call him up and ask how the appointment was and then getting talking about his feelings on the band

A band that practices will always have people call out. A band that rehearses will have committed people that plan better. also, not knowing the specifics of the Drs appt... if he feels the need or lack of ability to not "practice" after it, thats his prerogative and nobody else's business.

Unless he's always canceling for no good reasons, whats the point in being a d!ck about it?

You must have it really good where you live. I'm not a healthy man at all and if I make the mistake of taking ANY appointment after lunch time, I know my doctor is going to be running at least 30 minutes late.

Now, to be fair that's because my doctor doesn't run his patients on a conveyor belt with a "window" of access. If he needs to spend 40 minutes with me (and he has, removing the stitches from my amputation was a BEAR), he does; no questions asked and that is going to make him late for his other patients.

But anyway, never mind. I'm sorry I started this thread.

I get it. You're venting a bit. I started a thread, venting, trying to generate a duscussion. It can ge theraputic to put words down on paper, even if it is "virtual paper". Let this band member know that he's holding the band back. They need to know that when they commit to a rehearsal date, they need to stick to it. It's just like a Dr appointment, made in advance. It's no surprise. Sure, there are unforeseen events that pop up but, they need to be able to deconflict their calendar.

That's a nice theoretical standpoint, but in the real world where the rest of us go to doctors, if you've got an issue, you don't fiddly-dick around trying to fit a doctor's appointment around a hobby band's rehearsal schedule; if the Doc has an open appointment you leap on it. In the real world many doctors have a one to two year wait to be taken on as a new patient. I have been given a six month lead time for a simple annual physical.

I love this thread…I’m 74 and am in a similar situation & we are having a band meeting on Friday to resolve whether to stay a very loose group who get together a couple of times a month for fun or get serious & play for audiences. We’re a mix of musicians who made their living playing music and weekend warriors. I’ve played some very large venues with some big acts & studio work, but spent my career in a non-musical career, and am now content to do this for fun & as justification for having so many basses & amps. If the rest of the group wants to step it up to the level of gigging for dollars, I’m open to it, but reserve the right to pull out if I find it too overwhelming. I’m the oldest one in the group, but not by much—everyone of us has medical issues. My message to the OP is to have the whole band get together & discuss where things are and where you each want to be. As a member of your demographic, I recommend a lot of empathy for your band mate.

In the context of the OP, it isn't theoretical. The bandmate has canceled several practices and this is the latest excuse. With the weeks long and sometimes months long lead times for medical appointments, I don't think this one popped up unexpectedly. He either didn't deconflict his calendar or was looking for an excuse to cancel practice. I get it, no one is getting paid for practices but, my time is valuable to me. They are 7 months into a project with 2 practices (if I understood correctly) because this one guy keeps canceling for various reasons. If his health is that bad, he should be upfront. At this point, a band meeting is a bit late and might just be a formality before they decide to replace him.

Bandmate has a doctor's appointment at 4 p.m. but can't practice at 6 p.m. Does that seem right? It's a simple appointment, not anything very serious. I don't want to say what it is but it isn't invasive or anything that he would have to be anesthestized for or anything like that. A simple appointment.

Your bandmate may have a good reason for wanting to forgo practice, something you're not privy to, so it's really not your call.

Rehearse without him. All you need is two people to make a rehearsal.
+1

You can still work on music

Might be worth checking in with everybody in the band to talk about goals. You might be the only frustrated person. Or, doctor-goer might be the only flake. Get things out in the open. Have numbers ready - x amount of rehearsals that were planned and then cancelled.

Take it from a geezer that knows...make your doctor appointments early in the day (especially if you have to fast for bloodwork). As the days progresses, your doctor will get further and further behind in his/her appointments and you'll be waiting longer and longer to be seen.

Dude has a doctors appointment. Cut him some slack. Simple appointment or complex it doesn’t really matter. Some things take precedence and for me, health is one of those things. Get together and practice with everyone else, spend the time working on your playing, or just enjoy the night off. Don’t create an issue where there isn’t one.

As I said in post #7 this person has missed a lot of rehearsals since we've been trying to put this new band together, some health related, some not, some seem like he's just not wanting to practice, like he's looking for some/any reason not to. So, yeah, the context is that he's missed a lot, which I had previously resisted posting about.

As a matter of fact, with tonight's rehearsal cancelled it will be over two months since our last rehearsal. And since we're talking about it, our first rehearsal for this new band was on August 3, 2022 and from then to now we've only rehearsed 7 times out of a potential 26 rehearsal nights. So yeah, we've missed WAY more than we have rehearsed (not all due to this one guy, but most of them were) and we've never had rehearsals two weeks in a row.

But anyway, never mind. I'm sorry I started this thread.
You don't need a doctor to give you the prognosis. Good luck.

When did you ever have a doctor's appointment where the doctor saw at the specified time, especially in the late afternoon? As the day goes on, the wait gets longer. And, how far is it from the doctor's office to the rehearsal location?
I think you're being unreasonable.

Your bandmate will get to the appointment early and the Doctor will not see him on time (very rare) and your guy will then get caught up in rush-hour traffic trying to get to a practice that is important , but not more important then health . On the other hand........come on man , what about the band !
